Long time lurker here who has bought a lot of chips via PM on this site. I don’t post much but got to wondering the other day how many of the gorgeous sets photographed, talked-about and transacted on this site actually see play time.

For example I hosted a game last week where rather than the usual $1/2 NL we had some different people who wanted to do $100 buyins so changed to $0.25/0.50 NL. That required me to use some $0.25 chips. The only ones had had were from a Modern Clay set that I bought back in the day from Sidepot that had literally never been played. My reaction was “I can’t put these on a live table, what if I lose one?!!”. Plus they will lose their “never been played” status (although truthfully those BCC chips in their chalky untouched-by-human-hands state are not the most playable anyway).

Oh and my reaction to actually needing the $0.25 chips was that I need to buy more so that I don’t have to use the one I have in the unlikely event it’s ever necessary in the future!!

As a result I have 4 sets of really mint chips for different levels of cash games and tournaments that are great but never get played, and then a set of fairly well-worn casino chips (where each denomination is from a different casino) that actually get played regularly.

Am I totally crazy or is this typical??

I have a decent number of sets, and I used to own a bunch of Grail sets that were essentially unplayed mint. I had narrowed down my sets to those that I really want to play from time to time, or ones that I might find a use for later.

For instance, I have my main fat tire sets, both tournament and cash. And I have some really cool collectible Paulson sets, but none that are Chalky mint anymore. That way I don't hesitate to put these into play from time to time I have some China clay chips that I will take to bar games when I play, and I have some old China clay chips and dice chips that sit in bins in case I ever want to gift somebody a low end set.

I like to play with my chips and believe the hobby is way more fun when felting what you have worked towards. Bonus points if it is with other chippers who can appreciate them. If there are chips I cannot ultimately find a spot to use or felt, the intention is to sell/trade them when the time is right. I would recommend starting small and ripping the band-aid off at least one of those minty sets and go from there.

Ultimately do what you want though; PCF will find a way to bitch about whatever that is :).

I don't like owning things that I don't use, so I usually peddle chips that sit on the shelf too long to people who are hopefully more likely to enjoy them.

As such, I have a set for every style of poker we play and nothing that doesn't see the felt at least occasionally.

Poker chips and bourbon bottles: they're both pretty and there are those that may buy them as trophies to display. To me, that seems pointless.

I have way too many sets, but each of them sees play no matter what. It might take a while to rotate back to them, but all of them will hit the felt.

I buy my chips and chip sets with the intention of getting them in play. I rotate them out each game. I don't get every single chip from each set into play, but sometimes come close. I spread my sets to handle both 0.25/0.50 games as well as 1/2 games.

Edit: I treat my chips like I treat my bourbon. They are for sharing to obtain maximum enjoyment.

Most people who bought multi sets plan and used them for their game.

Some people who bought multi sets but never used them mostly fall into these two groups

(1) non poker hosts who are more interested in buying them as display collection-able items
(2) flippers who buy the set as investment items

I have 6 cash sets and a limit set. All of them hit the felt. A few of them might only hit the felt a few times a year. They all eventually get played with. A lot of times I will let a guest pick the set to be in play which may result in back to back games where they are felted.

When I get bored with a set, I sell it and look for something else.

Quite a bit.

People LOVE my Pharaohs and my Custom Hitmen sets.

awesome! My hot stamped bourbons are requested a lot. Otherwise it is a pretty solid mix for the rest of my sets.

I am really enjoying the Foxwoods casino set that I got from @joeyshin I think they have the best feel to them. Especially when shuffling them!

The way I see it life is short and we don't know where the end is.

Enjoy the good stuff in moderation of course. Drink the good wine/bourbon, play with the good chips, take that trip your wife/kids have always wanted to do.

Don't go and yolo your entire bank account on a new chip set though lol

@toothpic says I only live once... That means it's time to finally build that TRK set and some Tigers too!
