Jurisdictions vary, of course. But generally speaking an engagement ring is a conditional gift which means that if the condition (marriage) doesn’t happen, the giver gets the ring back. But a ring given on Christmas is just another gift - can’t get that back, so you’d better marry her.

Lol that is why, 20 years ago TOMORROW, I got engaged. Still very happily married, but risk management still important!
