I recently lost my job after 34 years and I am looking for employment. Not able to move, so would need to be remote or in the Harrisburg PA area.
System Engineer with over 30 years in healthcare claim payment systems - application development, technical leadership, production support, direct customer support, and team leadership. Proficient in multi-tier systems, mainframe applications, and various database and programming technologies.

Technical Skills:
  • Mainframe – Assembler, COBOL, DB2 , VSAM, SQL, CICS, JCL
  • XML and JSON
  • AGILE (JIRA/Confluence)
  • General computer skills – Word, Excel, Visio, etc.

Any leads or help would be greatly apprectiated. I am also willing to learn new skills and leverage my experience as business systems analyst.

Good luck. Great skills, still very much in demand as most of them are not being taught anymore and millions of lines of code still performing production tasks.

Very sorry to hear Steve....with that resume you will bounce back in no time.

During my last assignments in industrial manufacturing (windmills), I can remember paying outragous day rates to COBOL specialists since they are impossible to find nowadays. They were all freelance....maybe another option to look into ?

Sending good karma....and hang in there (34 years doesn't come easy)

That sux.

I got my start in I.T. as a COBOL programmer on a VAX VMS mainframe. I've had to redefine my skillset a couple of times since then. Never fun.

Sincere good luck to you in finding something new.

I have a buddy that is a long time MF COBOL programmer. He is doing 6-12 month contracts. He is okay with retiring but they keep extending the contracts!
