I've been lurking around here for a while, and I figured I should say hi. I've been playing 18XX with a mixed set of suited/dice chips that I cobbled together from the thrift store. They work fine for me and my group, but I'm on the lookout for something nicer.

What is 18xx?
Board game.

More like a family of board games.

Welcome, friend! Enjoy the deep dark hole that you’re about to fall into. So many wonderful chips in store for you!

Sorry for the thread derail - but what is the best introductory 18xx game and how can I acquire it? I had read 1889 was a good one to check out but I couldn’t seem to find it for sale in the usual places. Apologies for my ignorance on the subject.

@MarquetteMonkey
Ask 2 18xx players and you’ll get 3 opinions ;) Some will say: "Start with 1830 like we did in the old days!". Which is still valid as it will teach you the basics which are still essential for a majority of 18xx games today. Others will push 1846 which is readily available from GMT as it’s a fine introduction with some sharp edges removed. Then there’s 1889 which you could print and play yourself (files are on boardgamegeek.com aka BGG). … and many other games like the recently kickstarted 18Chesapeake. I’d recommend starting with Ambie’s video series as an intro:
Then ask around on BGG or in slack channels (invite to 18xx), on Reddit or on the yahoo mailing list for a local guy to teach you (and maybe some friends) and play whatever tickles your fancy. No matter which game you pick an experienced teacher will be invaluable.

@zhixing

Welcome :) We are in the same boat ;)

And to OP: hi there! I only arrived yesterday at the forum; for the same reason as you :^).

I'm also a new 18xx explorer. So far I've been really enjoying Poseidon and Baltimore & Ohio. Maybe not strictly 18xx but very very similar and good to get hooked :^). Main benefit for me is their shorter playing times. I'm now waiting on the 18Chesapeake kickstarter to arrive to dive in deeper into the genre.

@MarquetteMonkey 1889 was my introduction to the genre. I PnP'd my copy using Carthaginian's files that are available on BoardGameGeek.

One way to experience 18xx on the cheap is the old DOS implementation of 1830, which is available for download on abandonware sites. It even has a hotseat multiplayer mode to play with your friends.

EDIT: Thank you to everybody for the welcome!
