I’ve gotten some poker chip samples in over the last few days and I’ve been eyeing others. As I’m new to this and have the same one set for 20+ years now, been checking YouTube reviews, googling etc. googling inevitably leads back to here and I see a lot of the same comments. Mainly, someone got something or is interested in something and the response they get is, oh I HAD those. Right now, I’m just getting a fix by getting sample sets. But in the end, do members here mainly end up getting their own custom sets?

I wouldn't say mainly but its a popular route. Customs vary wildly though; some cheap full custom sets cost under $500 while others are several thousands of dollars. I wouldnt lump them all together.

Some love to make something squarely their own while others want to own a piece of history.

I'm relatively new, but did a ton of reading before joining and that's hard to pin down. I think it depends on how deep the chipping infection goes in the individual. In the milder cases the patients seem to pick up one or two reasonably priced sets and go about their business, using and enjoying them and never looking back. These patients have low post counts and short engagement periods. With the relatively cheap custom ceramics from Tina, some of these may be custom sets.

In slightly more advanced cases patients appear to go from set to set, buying one and selling the previous to fund it. The value of the sets seems to go up at this point, and for many of these patients a custom CPC order or two may occur.

In the worst cases patients begin to hoard chips, collecting multiple more expensive sets, from hard to obtain leaded paulson chips to multiple custom CPC orders as the sickness begins to instill in the patient an insatiable need for moar. chips. MOAR. CHIPS. MOARCHIPS!!! But, not every patient will wind up with customs, some simply satisfy this need with the available stock of chips from casinos, living or deceased.

I went straight to customs and have no desire for casino/fantasy/generic sets or collecting.

If you do go customs, don't rush it like I did with my first two sets (that are no longer with me).

I have ~ 30 sets. No customs. started on the custom design a few times, but never finished it.

We each have our own path. Starting with samples is a great beginning. Where it all ends up is on you.

Have fun, meet nice people, spend more than you expected. -=- DrStrange

I have been chipping for 18 years. I currently have 8 total sets including two relabeled sets. I have no desire to ever get customs.
Honestly I’m not to much into the custom sets. I’ve look at things and toyed with things but I just think in the end it will be far more costly and at some point I’ll want to move on like it was a regular set of chips that I got from somewhere.

This to me sounds more fun than having a custom set. Just having a ton of different sets to pick and choose from.

I think you should really be in love with a theme and/or design to spring for customs.

One of the benefits of non-custom sets is that you can generally get some/most of your money back by selling them if you want something different, or you just want to get out of chipping in general. It’s a harder sell with customs in most cases.

For people with a limited budget or a short attention span it may not be the best route or even the best end goal.

To each their own though!

Edit: Tacking on one more thing. Customs are without a doubt a much better way to keep your game secure though. If you ever have worries about people sneaking in or replicating chips, customs are definitely the way to go.

Some people are drawn to customs and some aren’t. Of the people who are really into chipping, I’d guess maybe half of them or fewer have gone the customs route.

Not yet, but I did get my own custom embossed bison leather money clip. Does that count?
