Since the start of the poker boom I thought I was the only one who was weird enough to be into chips this much. I remember being a teenager and dying for paulson chips for my little 4 person .25/.50 game I’m glad to see that I’m not alone.

I’ve been out of the poker chip loop for a long time until recently when I found this site / hobbyphilic’s vids on youtube. After doing research and buying samples of dunes, milanos, and nexgens, I decided to purchase 600 milanos for a home game which this site basically inspired me to start. They are arriving tomorrow so it looks like I’ll have a long weekend of oiling ahead of me.

Some first impressions of china clays from someone who is fairly new and unbiased to buying chips is that while they seem to be the best bang for your buck chip around right now, they seem a bit flimsy and inauthentic to me. They seem more like poker discs than chips to me if that makes any sense; probably because of the rounded edges. They don’t appear to “interlock” when stacked like real casino chips do. They kind of just look like they are laying on top of each other when stacked up. I love the designs of some of them, I just wish they were a millimeter or two thicker and just slightly more square around the edges. Also the fact that you have to oil them manually is mind blowing to me. Seems like an easy thing for the manufacturers to solve but I don’t know all the ins and outs of chip production.

The nexgens have better shape/shine than the CC’s imo but just feel like straight up plastic and are a little too light. That said, those will probably be my next buy for starter tournament set.

Anyway, I look forward to posting / browsing around some more. Cheers!

Welcome! Sounds like you are likely going to be around for awhile and will end up will a set of paulsons or maybe even TRKs. China Clay's are great and serve their purpose but they definitely are not the icing on the cake. Hope you have fun this weekend!

Regards, Brie

Welcome! You are much better informed then I was when I started! Good luck on your chipping journey!

Welcome! Royals are the best of the bunch for CC's (IMO), and are relatively inexpensive ($0.49 ea). Many people love them for a mid-level starter set. They stack well, have more square edges than Milanos or other CC's, and don't appear cheap or flimsy (again IMO). Oiling isn't as big an issue as you might think, and definitely makes the colors pop! (or you can just play with them while eating pizza and potato chips and it will accomplish the same thing over time, but your cards may get oiled as well). ;)

But get samples of a bunch of different options and decide for yourself what you like!

600 newly oiled milanos. Took about 2 days. I feel like a few years from now when some new amazing chips are on the market we will all be laughing about how crazy it was that you had to hand oil chips back in the day.

I just wish they were a millimeter or two thicker
The standard thickness of poker chips today is 3.3mm, although some china clays and CPC chips suffer from minor varying thickness issues. Some older TRK chips were a tad thinner.

Casinos / manufactures don't pre oil chips because they get oiled naturally through continuous use.

The best bang/buck for chips are the GPI Monaco or Elites. They have the sharp edges you're looking for.
Hmm, those seem pretty solid. A little out of my price range for my first legit set though. I wanted to keep it under $300. The goal was to have a decent amount if chips to support anything from a .25/.50 to a 1/2 or possibly even a small 2/5.

China clay are the way to go then. Keep your eye on the Group Buy section of the forum. Great sets are created there a few times a year.
