TL;DR version: Are hot pink 5s a “Terrible” idea?

Longwinded version of the question: I’m almost done assembling a mixed Jack cash set — “mixed” meaning it includes both Jack Detroit primaries (25s, 100s, a few 500s) and Jack Cincys (those gorgeous 2s), plus some other RHCs with Gear relabels to serve as quarters and 5s.

The ketchup/mustard colors of the JD5s just don’t appeal to me, so I’ve been scrounging around for enough red RHC edgespotted chips to relabel as Jack 5s. Seems like RHC 5s are in short supply right now. Anyway, I finally secured three racks of Terrible’s La Granges (red base, purple & cream edgespots) in very good condition, and have ordered Jack 5 labels for them from Gear. I also bought two racks of Terrible’s hot pink .50s, which I was intending to relabel as .25s.

Truth is, I’m not all that crazy about the Terrible’s 5s. They’re looking crisper after some light oiling, but the red/cream/purple thing isn’t what I really want in my main “slave” chip. Been trying to round up Cancun 5s instead, but only have one rack so far, and the supply seems to have dried up.

And in reality, I don’t actually need quarters or even fracs—we play 1/2 NL and 2/5 NL here. I just thought it would be nice to have some... in case either my bankroll crashes or I resell the set someday.

Now: The more I look at these minty hot pink Terrible’s, the more I want to get them in play. I have 200 already, and with patience should be able to find another rack. So I’m thinking: Are pink 5s such a bad idea? Pink seems to universally signal “frac.” But the pink is so hot it’s practically red. (OK, maybe that’s a reach.) And once the guys got used to it, it would just be another $5 chip.

The general ethos here seems to be “whatever floats your boat.” So if my hunt for more Cancuns doesn’t work out, I may have to make those pinks into 5s. Or non-denoms (I have some thoughts on that!) which could go either way.

I dunno. Too much time off on the holiday leads to overthinking. Maybe I should just live with the red/cream/purple Terribles, and be patient until some Cancuns finally hit the market again. Just getting impatient. And those hot pinks are so nice.

@WhiteMamba1646 has done it.

FWIW, the cash set also includes a rack of navy Horseshoe Cincy 2s relabeled (by Gear for another PCFer) as 20s. These are also chips I’ll probably never use... but they popped up in sales, I was feeling flush, and couldn’t resist. So maybe I should stick with the idea of filling out all the various options, just to have a big, flexible set. <mulling>

Go for it. Mine aren't as bright but pink is the new red at my place.

Nope.

I'm all for non-traditional colors across the board; instead, I focus on color cohesion. If pink 5's jive with the rest of your set then go for it.

In that light, I'd think bright yellow fracs and black 1's would go great with pink 5's. Imagine them in a splashed pot.

I’m new here so take this with a grain of salt. But when I was making my custom set I could not care less about typical colors.

I made it so that the workhorse chips would be the ones that I liked the most, regardless of color, all conventions be damned. None of my regulars at the game are casino goers anyways. But even if they were, they’d figure it out quickly enough.
Hell if the non-conventional colored chips tilt someone, that much the better. ;)

The reason that "standard" colors are a thing is because:
  • They are common, and thus less prone to errors.
  • The colors between denominations are tried and true, and thus less likely to result in dirty stacks.
Any attempt to deviate could create errors and/or dirty stacks. I will not play at a game, no matter how nice the players are, if the chips are designed to force me into making costly mistakes.

Make sure any deviation is well thought out, then proceed accordingly.

funny thing is, I felt the standard colors of the DDLM set were MORE likely to cause dirty stacks. Hence why I switched them up.

And I’m sure you understand making a set you like doesn’t mean they're designed to cause mistakes. In the end it’s still the players responsibility to know what the chips are... and it’s a home game ffs. ;)

Nice. I have a Wanted ad up again looking for another rack of the pink Terrible’s, so that I can pull the trigger on this idea.

I have a line on another 140 hot pink Terrible’s.. That would get me to 340, enough to go ahead with the idea of making these my workhorse 5s.
