I can’t say I ever liked Joann’s. It was just there when I needed something for my home game.

It never blew my socks off, and I hated its fluky coupon system… But it was handy when I needed some rail foam, or some wood doohickey to make a homemade dealer button, or some stick-on felt to re-line a chip box.

My next closest similar place (Michaels) is a good 45 minutes from my house, so I guess I’ll miss Joann’s.

On the plus side, I assume that they will be liquidating a ton of stuff as the private equity vultures close these stores, so there may be some real bargains finally. But the kind of stuff I bought at Joann’s were things I tended to need unexpectedly (and fast), so it may be hard to know what to snap up.

My first (super-elliptical!) table build used an outdoor fabric I found at Joann’s:

If I hadn’t been able to inspect fabrics in person, I’d never have known about this option or had confidence to use it… The table has held up for years (though now is in storage since I got a Gorilla Illuminati).

Another Joann find was sheets of black foam invarious thicknesses, which I used to fill gaps when I renovated a Versa case to fit Paulson racks:

I can’t lament a chain store that much, but there’s real value in being able to browse stuff in person and come up with unexpected solutions. I could obviously get the same products online, but don’t always know what I prefer to use until I stumble upon it in-store.

Based on what I see locally, I expect Staples to go next… Their inventory seems low, and not many people in the store compared to a decade ago.

In college, over 20 years ago, I decided to borrow 2 round tables from the dorm lounge, go to Jo-Ann fabric and buy 2 large pieces of green felt, and felted those lounge tables, and ended up hosting two tables of 6 players each on a game on a Saturday night. Worked like a charm. I was the RA and the 2 bedroom 1 bath living quarters that I lived in worked perfectly. One room was set up as a living room so we had plenty of space.

Such good times.

Another Joann special… I wanted to make a dealer button wide enough for a deck of cards. (We use two decks; the button shuffles while the dealer runs the current hand. Second deck gets placed on the button.) I found this wood medallion, spray painted it, slapped on a vinyl label:
