Hello everybody.

I have been researching an upgrade to my "dice" poker chip set for a couple of weeks now. I eventually found these forums by recommendation from the /r/poker subreddit. After lurking for a week or so, I decided to create an account and thought I would give an introduction.

I run a monthly home game where we play cash micro stakes (10c/25c with $20-40 buy-in). I keep the stakes low since some of my regular players can't afford much higher and it is still a lot of fun regardless. However, I am at the point where I would like nicer chips, preferably with denominations.

Since I use a 10c small-blind, I'm very limited on the stock sets available. I have ordered samples of the CC Pharaoh, Majestic, Milano, Royals and Tiki Kings. The Milano and Royals do not have a 5c chip, but I still wanted to see what they feel like in person.

After seeing all of the beautiful Paulsons and even some of the ones produced by ASM, I can see why people pay up for them. I'm actually a coin collector as well, so the idea of collecting them for aesthetic appeal is not lost on me. I personally like the Paulson Pharaoh's quite a bit, but the idea of shelling out $1500 for a set of 500 isn't something my wife is going to entertain at the moment.

Welcome!! Your dilemma falls in stride with others here! However, if you have appeal for a higher end set, I reccomend skipping the lower end as you'll save money in the long run. Perhaps your wife may understand if you explain to her that they will carry their resale value through the years? Lol none the less, hope you find something awesome to fit the bill!!!

Cheers, Brie

Welcome aboard!

You could always just skip the 10¢ small blind and play .25/.25. I doubt it would change the game much at all. That would save you money on chips, while opening your options up for sets.

The beauty of this place is that you can build your set over time. Paulson Pharaoh's come onto the classifieds section here all the time. You can buy 100-200 chips at a time, but if you're anything like me, your discipline goes out the window and before you know it, you're thousands of dollars out between chips, good cards, a table, and nice chairs.

If you listen to the consensus here (I disagree with some of it), the pecking order from most to least important in running a home game is this:

Consensus:
Table
Chairs
Chips
Cards

If you ask me:
Chairs
Table
Cards
Chips

It's sacrilegious of me to say that chips are the least important part of a good home game being that this is a poker chip message board, but oh well. Get samples, find things that you like, and then start building a set. I wish I took the advice of those when I first started here and went right to the high end chips instead of going from China clays, to ceramics, to used Paulson's, to mint Paulson's, and also to BCC and CPC clay chips.

Welcome!

Welcome! And to echo what Brie said, the higher price tags on the Paulsons and up are pretty intimidating at first, but they will almost always sell at cost, or even more if you hold onto them long enough.

Milano labels easily pop off, and Gear makes labels for nickels. I used the grays and blues to make nickels.

Poker chip mania sells them for $.30 apiece, which when the grand total including shipping, etc started adding up made me go that route versus Pharohs.

Welcome to the forum! I too am married to a person who would disown me for discovering I spent $1000 on poker chips.

You could also get Gear or ABC Gifts to make custom labels! If OP plays microstakes, I'd go with 5 cent chips over 10 cent chips, especially with the big blind at 25 cents. Makes the game run smoother and offers the option to have a microstakes 5/10 cent game for informal games with family and novice players.

+1 to these two. Custom labels are a great option as well!

Welcome friend!! I'm a fellow micro fan and there are options out there, just takes time finding them! Both paulson and BCC made FOCs they bbn look like this...

The set has grown since then finally found a rack of dollars!! I think China clay and relabels would probably be the easiest and cheapest way to go!! But there are other options!! Enjoy the forum!! It is not only awesome for chips but friendships/ meetups and just being amongst other people that have the same itch you will have very shortly! Great people with tons of knowledge about chips all you have to do is ask! Enjoy your chipping journey sir! Fellow chipper Ben

I appreciate all the feedback and kind words.

I still go back and forth on starting with a higher end set. You make a good point about them retaining their value. It is just hard to justify (to myself or my wife) going from a $60 set to a $1500 set.

I have considered this. That is part of the reason I got the samples of Milano and Royal even though they don't have a 5c. If I got rid of the 5c chip, I could probably get by with 400 chips. I have a game next week and will see what other players think.

I have thought about buying a set of CC Pharaohs and then slowly replacing each denomination with Paulson Pharaohs over time. This would be more expensive then skipping the China Clay. However, it would let me try the CC set first and see if I find them adequate.

Milano labels easily pop off, and Gear makes labels for nickels. I used the grays and blues to make nickels.

I read a few threads about relabeling Majestics. I knew that Gear had the original labels for them from Apache. This is the first I am hearing about it being done for Milanos. From your pictures, the nickel label looks like it matches very well. I will keep this as an option if I like the Milanos (I'm still waiting for my samples).

Most the micro stakes player here use .25/.25. Saves time and money, just b/c you have been doing things one way (10/25) doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement!

Whats your budget for chips we can all point you in the right direction.

$500 would be my stretch budget for now. I would prefer that to include 500 chips (400 if using 25c/25c) and a carrying case.

Fwiw get your China Clays and then delete your account. I was playing on slugged chips 6 months ago and found this place researching China Clays and have since gone through those CCs, a CPC set, an RHC set, and now milling my own THC set and suits mold Paulson sets in that time. It escalates quickly.

Also, I inherited a .10/.25 hosted game and my guys were adamant against going to .25/.25 (even though they routinely played $1/$2 at the casino), but by the second week they preferred it. It makes the play much better.

As others have said, if you buy Paulson at a good price you know you can resell them for the same. Here is a casino set of Paulsons for $480 with $2.50 snappers which can be used as quarters or relabled...

Its interesting how many people seem to be telling the same story... going from CC to high dollar chips over the course of months. I guess you could have worse hobbies. :)

After talking with @toynoob, I'm thinking I might hold off on the CC and see if I can cobble together a mixed set of used Paulsons without breaking the bank. I did see the Tunica Roadhouse set mentioned above. It definitely seems like a good value, but since I just started looking at higher end chips, I figure I should do some more browsing to see what is out there.

You can keep an eye out too on the classifieds here. There is usually a CC set or two that comes up every week. If you buy CCs at a decent used price you can resell them for no loss and then move onto something else after you have a better sense of the market. You can also post a wanted ad in the classifieds for a used CC set and see if anything comes up. I think the real market for used CCs is about 60% of retail price.

Welcome and enjoy your search for new chips. If you're down to two sets and one is a bit more expensive but you like it more, do the right thing and get the set you really want (as long as it's within reason). I think this helps alleviate the urge to upgrade but sometimes there's nothing you can do about that, especially if you continue to browse the forum.
