Hi all, I’m in the market for a nice set of chips for a home game. We have been playing tournaments, but my plan is to also do some cash $.50/1 games.

We have only gathered a few times, and I’ve borrowed a suitcase of chips with suits on them - most likely plastic slugs but idk. Would like to upgrade just for fun, but not necessary.

I ordered a sample set of Majestic and of Milano, and just two basics from CPC.

I saw someone selling a Set of CPC. It more than I need, but looks like a good deal, so registered to show interest. I really don’t think for my purpose going from .35 a chip to $2+ makes any sense. Change my mind! :)

If you get the chip bug, it'll save you more money diving into the deep end right now, vs buying a bunch of chips that you might not be happy with in the long run.

If you think your game is sustainable, and you desire nice chips. I would take your time, embrace the journey, do your research, then buy whatever the hell you want. If its china clays, paulsons, cpc's, ect.....doesn't matter. You'll have done your due diligence right from the start.

Oh, and welcome to PCF.

Well, here's the 'chip rental' theory.

If you spend ~$200 for a set of china clays (like Majestic or Milanos), you can categorize that purchase as an expense. But if you ever decide you want to go in another direction with your chippies, you'll have a hard time re-selling them for say 50% of their purchase price.

or...

You could spend $1000 on a set of nicer Paulsons (or maybe CPC's). I like to categorize this purchase as an investment: not a looking-for-future-profit type of investment but at least a holds-its-value type of investment. If you decide you want to go in another direction with your chippies, it's likely that you'd be able to re-sell the Paulson set for close to what you originally paid. Even if you loose a little money on the resale, you've played with high quality chips for the rental price of what you would have spent on the china clays. Chip prices fluctuate a bit depending on availability, group buys, Chip room sales, what us chippie degenerates are salivating over this month, etc. But if you don't pay a wildly inflated price for quality chips and you have patience to not sell during a market dry period, the Paulson 'rental' cost could be $0'ish.

The china clays are decent chips for the money. I'm sure many people come here to PCF, do their research, buy these types of chips and then move on with their life. The chipping fever never really takes hold. But for many of us that are still posting here and stalking the classified and obsessing over pretty little clay discs, we see our rookie purchase of china clays as an expense that could have been better applied to the good stuff.

But everyone is different - maybe you'll get those Majestics and Milanos in hand and you'll be perfectly happy with them. You can buy your set, log off of PCF and go enjoy your home game with nicer chips than most people have. Or maybe you'll wonder what all this Paulson talk is all about, pick up a barrel of casino used chips and fall down the rabbit hole. You're on the right track - get some samples and decide for yourself.

Well said sir. I couldn't agree more.

Welcome!!! Samples are a great way to start and most chips that aren't paulson's or highly sought after casino sets or customs can be affordable and serve their purpose! However we all know nothing compares to the real deal!!! Each of us here has our own preferences and are more than happy to help you on your search to the right chip for you!!! I am in agreance with @BSteck's comment regarding China clays and they do serve their purpose (my man and I started there ourselves) but quickly learned that the casino chips floating around this forum sure are pretty, have a nice feel and hold their value!!!! Needless to say we have delved into the rabbit hole ourselves....all be it an expensive endeavor it is joyous to build a set you are proud of!!!! Wishing you luck with your journey through the chip world and building your own set!!!!

Welcome to the forum!
IMHO, off-the-shelf (non custom) CPCs, including Key Wests (check them out), are the best combination of value, class, financial investment and peace of mind (you won't enjoy the latter if you 're going to spend your life night and day on the 'net, searching for random-accessed, sought-after, overpriced Paulsons).:)

Looks good. I wonder if I can add to my sample order. I’ll call Josh. I’m picking this up quick, lol!

What’s the appeal of oversized? Seems weird without ever having touched one
But to answer your question... oversized are bigger, heavier, thumpier, they feel just a little more special. I haven't seen the oversized Royals in person yet but I do have some oversized Paulsons as high-denom chips in one of my sets. They don't see the felt much but when they do they make a little bigger statement - kinda like using plaques but while still staying with a round chip.

Part of it too is that us degenerates love to chase the new shiny chippie thing.

My experience has been to obtain a 1200 chip set of Milano for tournament or cash, and I love them. Having handled some Paulsons I’m going to start building a new set of those over time.

Not everyone has $1000 sitting around and Milano is good for that because you can start your games (the people I play with actually gave me a lot of compliments LOL) and then slowly build that set at Poker Chip Mania (cheapest Milanos on the net - $.30 per chip). Once you’re happy, you can start building your next set.

Or maybe you do have $1000 burning a hole in your pocket in which case go for it! :D

@TheWhiteJZ
Unless you 're sure you would be honestly happy with china clay or "ceramic" chips for the rest of your life, I recommend that you jump on @crussader 's offer.
If only a great CPC set awaited each new member upon joining, at below factory price...:wow:

Another entry-level, just-get-some-chips-to-play-with option is the Claysmith line. Plastic & slugged but also denominated & only 16¢/chip. A step up from the dice chips without denting the budget too much.

They were my first 'real' chippies so I still have a bit of a soft spot for them.

A question idk where else to put it:

Is a barrel one row in a rack aka 20?
Is a rack 100?

Newbie questions ...

Yes to both. Good questions!

The rental fee concept is valid (I use it often), but do the math. A loss of 50% on a $150 set is about the same as a loss of 10% on a $750 set or 5% on a $1500 set, all of which are reasonable outcomes. Liking what you buy is a good strategy.

Welcome to the site! Good luck not spending all your money.

Well, here's the 'chip rental' theory.

If you decide you want to go in another direction with your chippies, it's likely that you'd be able to re-sell the Paulson set for close to what you originally paid.

This is where the 'chip rental' theory fails for me. I never want to sell, only buy!

A better approach might be to win enough at poker to pay for all the chips you want. I also struggle with this one. ;)

Hello and welcome. I am in agreement with @grantc54 in that I love buying and will never have enough and I agree with @JRReynolds6181 that not everyone has the money to get a $1,000 set and having a nice set of China Clays (CCs) while you save for a nicer set is a good way to start.

Personally I have thousands of chips lots of CC, Chipcos, Paulson's and others and my group of players love ALL of them and we play with all of them. So, sure I love my Paulson's, they seriously see no more use than my Majestics or CC Dunes -- I just love chips and playing poker. So, like @allforcharity there is no right answer, chipping is a very personal love affair with small pieces of clay and clay like materials. And, just an FYI, If after you get your samples you decide to get either Majestics or Milanos, I have several thousand of them in just about any combination you'd like. PM me and we can chat.
