When building a mixed set, several PCF members suggested "to maintain a decent amount of spot progression through the set". What does this really mean?

Is this referring to just making sure the edge spots differ in some way from denomination to denomination?

More specifically, is it referring to color of spots? Number of spots? Position of spots? Shape of spots?

Does it mean that you should go from 2 spots, to 3 spots, to 4 spots, etc...?

I also see that it is common to have a solid frac, which I'm sure plays into this progression too.

Thanks,

You probably don't have to worry about it overly much since it often takes care of itself as denoms increase in value. But it's not about color, it's complexity, usually more or separated spots, or spot color on top of another.

It's not as important to me personally but normally like variety. This isn't optimal for progression since the $5 is simple but still my fav mixed set.

Personally I would just want different edgespots on each denom.. there's no "rule" regarding going exactly from 1 spot to 2 to 3 ect ...
You may find more "elaborate spots" on higher denoms make some sense, but no worries ...

Spot progression is somewhat overrated. You will find a lot of differing opinions on this though. But cash sets usually has some form of spot progression from lower to higher denominations.

I personally don't mind sets that all have the same spot pattern. As long as your chips have enough color/spot variation to differentiate them from one another in a dirty stack in bad lighting you are good.

It's strictly personal preference.

I have Flamingo spotted bird 1s and plan on PCA secondary 5s. I think the similarity of spots on those will tilt me so maybe I go another direction on the 5er

I used those with my set previously and thought they looked pretty good. :)
