What's everyone's thoughts on chip denoms for microstakes if you going with say a 10cent/20cent blind structure?

Would it be work well enough to have 10cent and 25 cent chips in play? rather than 5cent and 25cent?

I'm leaning more towards 10 cents but seems like more have opted for a 5cent chip instead

I went with 5c/25c/1/5 because we were spreading 5c/10c to be super beginner friendly. If you're playing 10c/20c, what are your opening bets?

If its going to play the same as 25c/25c I'd strongly prefer just starting at quarters, might play the same. as 10c/20c anyways. Means I can just buy enough to give everyone a full barrel of quarters to keep it splashy but don't have to have extra tiny chips.

^^ solid advice ^^

You can go 5c/25c/$1/$5 or 10c/50c/$1/$5

25c & 50c will be your workhorse in these stakes (or $1 if played deep)...in that case go 25c/25c

Yea. I think you got me already. I think 25c/25c would be the way to go actually. I like that
Up to you! 5c/10c is way too small for some groups but its a great splashy game for some of my student friends, if you think you're playing the micros it may be worth getting some nickels. Otherwise just enjoy usual preflop raises to 2 or 3 quarters.

I’m not a fan of those small stakes either. Lol however I have a group of older neighbors that I play with that like the tiny stakes friendly game they host. It’s not hold em, just a bunch of crazy dealer choice games and they usually do a 10 cent ante. I don’t host those games though. lol if I were to host a smaller game, I think I like the 25c25c style of hold em, and then just .25 ante if it’s a dealer choice night

My group switched from tournaments to cash about 2 years ago. We first went 10¢/25¢, but I quickly realized it was easier to play 25¢/25¢. Especially when it comes to paying out.

Oooh good call. I've recently convinced a wonderful older game to move to 50c ante with no bring-in or smaller ante chip. It took some convincing but worked out.

If you think they're gonna prefer that small chip for stud games or something, eh, get a cheap rack of non-denom.

Yeah, that's how our game is - circus games all night (with maybe a hand or two of hold'em to mix things up). We started at 5c/10c but recently moved up to 10c/25c. I'm repurposing my 5c chips to be a 'variable' chip for games like horse racing, open faced Chinese Poker, whatever.

@BottomPair7 is right - the first night we changed to 10c/25c, we immediately realized no one was using the nickles and everyone just played it like 25c/25c.

Easy peazy.

If you NEVER play 0.05/0.10 and ONLY play 0.10/0.20 and up, then go 0.10/0.50/1/5 for denoms. You can get away with relatively fewer 0.50 chips this way.

You will need more 0.50 chips I you go 0.10/0.50/2/10, which is also fine.

Been running a cash game for about 4 years now, and we have only played 0.25/0.25. For one its easy to find chips all you need is 0.25 and $1 chips. Its super fun, great for casual players that arent interested in losing a lot of money. We are just friends hanging out first, and if we come home with some extra cash cool. but no one ever really feels too bad about losing $25 after a night of hanging out drinking some beers. Thats cheaper than going out and drinking some beers TBH.

I generally use .50/1/5/20. I don't normally spread stakes below this (0.50/0.50) but if I were to expand downward, I would just add a rack of dimes.

Recommend getting chips with “normal” denominations and just apply a 2x, 5x, 10x divisor as you see fit. Then people can practice “real” stakes and get chips that will be used long term. Change the divisor and voila you have a new set!

I started with $10/$0.25 but after a few games, I sold my $0.05 chips, purchased some $0.50 chips and started playing with $0.25/0.25 blinds. $25 buy in or 100 BB.
Very happy to get rid of the nickels.

I play $1/$1 to $2/$2 with my regulars but play micro stake 10/20c with my family (more friendly setting and no one is going to have a terrible time even if they got bad beat mutlitimes in one session)

We are still able to use the same set for both stake by playing with 0.1 multiply ($1 as 10c, $5 as 50c) but eventually I did a custom set for the 10/20c stake using a slightly different denomination progression.

I think playing those stakes, if you're getting denom chips you might as well move over to 25c25c to save money per chip and just getting 25c $1 $5... I used to play 5c10c and 10c20c at my home games but that was one I used non denom slowplays. After curating my set I have 25c$1$5 as play 25c 25c because it's much easier to find 25c chips and you don't have to spend $1 a chip on 5c chips... Just my opinion though I think everyone has provided you solid information, just find what works for you!
