Heres a hypothetical. Cash game 6-8 players. 10c/10c blinds, $10-$20 buy in. Denoms: 10c, $1 and $5.
You can also think of it as $100/$100 blinds, $10,000-$20,000 buy in. Denoms: $100, $1000, $5000.
How many barrels of 10c chips should be given to each player for a $20 buy in for the game to be played comfortably?

I feel like this depends on the initial raise amount that plays in your game.
If the initial raise is 5x, then this gets through a barrel in 4 hands played -> now change needs to be made.

If the initial raise is smaller, then it takes more time to get through a barrel and players probably don't need as many fracs.
If the initial raise is larger, then players will put more $1 chips into play and won't need as many fracs.

I would agree with @Machine here that some sort of chip in between would help reduce the # of fracs on the table to facilitate better hosting.

1 barrel I feel is sufficient (even though I voted for 2 above).

That's an option but I like having 3 denoms and just a mountain of chips. I might (probably will) end up with 5/10 anyway though.

I host a .1/.2 game where the chips work the same way as 1/2 would. 1 barrel of white $1 (.1), 1 barrel of red $5 (.5) plus one extra and 3 green $25 ($2.5). This sets up everyone with $20 for micro and $200 when playing 1/2. We've done the same for .2/.5 as well.

Generic answer is 10 chips per player, but without a 50c chip you're obviously going to need more. 10c/50c/$2 would be preferable. If I had to choose a whole number of barrels I guess I'd say 2 or 3 per player because you're skipping a chip to get to $1.

10c x 20
50c x 20
$2 x 4

If you have enough $2 chips to cover re-buys you can get a ton of chips in play. You can also make 'em $2.50s to slightly boost the bank. I'm assuming you're using non-denominated chips but that's just my guess.

One is plenty. Most standard opens should be 50 cents. Half the players can call with their dimes while the other half can use $1 chips and get change from the pot.

Just play .25/.25?
Speaking from experience, the jump from 0.05/0.1 or even 0.1/0.2 to 0.25/0.25 is massive for some people.

I get more responses from my local guys for a 0.1/0.2 game where the min buy in is $20 versus a 0.25/0.25 game where the min buy is the same but the max buy increases from $40 to $50. Don't ask me why, but that's how it goes.
