Seeking opinions from tournament players on an interesting remark at the poker table earlier this week. Down to three players from nine. (Important to note: everyone agreed on the bubble to play winner take all.)
SB has 17BB's and is the least experienced player at the table. Has played some cash, but this may very well be his first venture into tournament poker. He is reading books about the game. (Don't know which ones.) His play is fairly straightforward. (Mostly ABC poker.)
The BB has 27BB's. His play has been more aggressive than usual. He is seeing more hands, raising more frequently pre-flop and is listening to his instincts in tight situations. You could say he has been a sticky player in this game, and has avoided being on the short end of the stick in big pots. He hasn't played in many tournaments lately, although he sits in on cash games whenever he can.
The Button has a reputation of being one of the best tournament players in the area. (Based upon the number of times he has reportedly finished in the money.) He is able to put players on hands exceptionally well and is widely known in the poker community because of the number of MTT's he participates in. He also has a reputation of being a formidable opponent amongst the poker players who frequent the underground poker room in our area.
He is sitting on 31BB's.
Action: Button opens the action by raising to three big blinds. SB folds. BB calls with red suited Ace, Deuce. Flop: Black 10, 8, 8. BB checks. Button bets. Hand is over. (Or should have been.)
Button shows 10c, 7c. SB exclaims that he had 10, Jack off-suit. To which the Button tells him that was a horrible fold pre-flop. He continues by saying 17 BB's. makes 10 Jack a call.
Really?? I know we are playing three handed, but just how horrible a play did the SB make by folding 10 Jack off suit considering his table position?
Secondly, I found it slightly out of place that he should be criticizing the new guy after putting in 10% of his stack with 10c, 7c. (Seems like a little bit of an over-bet to me.)
Please elucidate for me the merits of calling for the SB. And what are your opinions regarding the Buttons pre-flop bet size with 10c, 7c?
FWIW: The button just recently took the chip lead prior to this hand. I have half a suspicion that he may have been a little tilted that he wasn't having an easier time in the game. So I wonder if his remarks might have been designed to get inside of the SB's head.
