I'm new to the forum and I'm looking to get my first nice set of denom (low stakes) poker chips, but I'm a graduate student and I don't have the scratch to pay for a nice CPC or Paulson set. I'm primarily attracted to the Milanos for their minimal design. Nothing flashy, no fake casino name, just the denomination in large, legible font, well-designed, and nothing to distract the eye. Clean colors, molded. I've been using dice chips for a bit and, in all honestly, they're great except they're plastic and no denom. The simplicity of a CPC hot stamp seems nice too, but, again, the price is prohibitive. Is there anything else out there like this?

Thank you! :)

Welcome!
I think the Milanos are a decent pick, but I prefer the Majestics, you can pick them up from https://www.apachepokerchips.com/

I like them because they are 43mm, and they just feel really good, I like the sound. I think they will be easy to resell in the future as well. .49 each.

I would advocate for 600 chip set, I think it will run you about 350ish. You can also relabel them in the future if you want to get a custom label. Also you can get a .05 chip, and they have denoms, although I don't like a vegas standard on colors so, I would order the set in the colors I prefer and relabel them.

What's your actual budget? How quickly you looking to receive them?

If you don't mind a few months lead time there are some amazing sets you can put together in the group buy for pretty cheap. The textured no-molds are $0.35/chip it looks like. The latest one just started: https://www.pokerchipforum.com/thre...d-cards-mold-textured-no-mold-08-2024.121583/

Otherwise you can definitely find some chips that are an upgrade from the dice chips with denoms on for pretty cheap out there on the web too. The metal slug plastics in particular (King's Casino, Poker Knights, Monaco Club, etc) can be gotten for $0.20/chip if you search around a bit. They'll be much more widely available and obviously also cheap to buy and bring in to your game, so if security is a concern I'd steer clear of these, but it's probably the most chips for the buck.

It's also definitely worth going through the vendors listed in the vendor section and seeing what they've got available, and watching the classifieds. There have been some pretty great deals come through just since I joined, and it hasn't even been that long.

ETA: You can and should get samples of any of the more expensive chips you're thinking of buying before buying them. Actually hold them in your hand and see which you like better. Heck, even if you don't think you'll get -that- type of chip, getting samples of some of the nicer, more expensive ones is still a decent idea so you know what you could aspire to, if you like them enough.

ETA2: You know, I went back and reread your post and this may not be as helpful for you as I intended, if you're trying to stick specifically with china clay or better. Still good intermediary options while you save for something nice nice. heh

Did majestics grow to 43mm? Or do you mean royals?

For an alternative option, China-sourced ceramics with customizable art is available for slightly above the price point you're considering. Look for details under Broken Arrow in the Vendor section.

I think I might jump on this and try to relabel them eventually. This looks like too good of a deal to pass up, thank you! :)
Yeah it’s a great deal!
Look up cleaning and oiling methods on the search bar, maybe some cheap starburst or roulettes for fracs and your set!
Good luck!

Already have, just to make sure it's feasible and not a PITA. Thank you again!

Do you have any recommendations on cheap starbursts? Watch the classified section?
