In my quest for looking for a suitable quarter for my horseshoe set, I came across some mint BCC $2 derby chips. I like the look of the colors and they have 3 edge spots just like the 1's and 5's which for me is great. I have never played with BCC chips and haven't yet gotten the Paulsons' in play. Will there be that much of a difference between the chips? Is this a "no-no" for the purists on this site.

They are cheap in comparison and look nice on their own. Just getting a feel if anyone has ventured down this path in dire times.

This may be flippant but who cares? If they interest you, buy them. If you think they match well play with them. If they don't, then keep them as separate sets. Who gives a crap what someone on the Internet thinks?

I play cards with a bunch of guys who think a six color dice set is the shit because most of them only have four or five colors. Busting out real casino chips or my custom CPCs doesn't get quite the response you might think. Yes, everyone thinks they're cool and hardcore but if I sold all of them tomorrow and went back to the dice set they'd be just as happy so long as there's cards and beer on the table.

The real question for me would be playability. How do they stack, both next to each other and in mixed stacks? If one is significantly taller than the other or slightly different diameters that may affect your ability to use them together. Beyond that unless you're playing with a group of PCFers most people don't really care nor would they appreciate the difference between the two.

Three things...
  1. If it's a no-no for the purists, who gives a damn? Did they pay for them? Are they playing with them? Do what you want and what you can afford. If "purists" don't like it...well, they don't own the chips, so they don't need to worry about it.
  2. Fracs are frequently on a different mold than the rest of the house chips, frequently a Bud Jones suits mold or a unicorn mold. If it's good enough for casinos, it can be good enough for you if you want it to be.
  3. When it comes to mixed sets, the only rule is "There are no rules."
I don't think you mean this to be a mixed set, per se, but when it comes to fracs, sometimes you need to do what you can to fill the gap because "real" fracs are expensive. My advise is to use what you can obtain, what you like, and what you can afford, until another option comes along that you like better or you can put more money into. If you can, I'd probably try to land a rack of hotstamped roulettes, or even the roulettes that Jim is selling on black friday would be a viable option.

"Off with their heads, off with their heads I say."

Garden City used the Paulsons and BCC's together and another local cardroom, Lucky Chances mixes Bud Jones, BCC's and Chipco's all together sometime in the same game. :p

I see I see.....I guess I was more curious as to seeing if there were any major differences in playing with them such as size or something that would affect a game. I appreciate the added comfort you have provided in knowing if its round and on a poker table it works. :D

To echo others' advice, the only opinion that matters belongs to you.

I tried mixing some suits mold BCC with a THC set and was not thrilled with the contrast, but I suspect other combinations might work better.

There are 50 shades of chip OCD. Finding yours is part of the journey.

These are the sun mold I believe....

I've mixed BCC Flame & Sun mold chips with Paulson RHC chip many times. They have a very similar feel especially the Flame & the RHC.

This. I'm usually the only one who thinks my chips are cool. Even my real good friends who love poker as much as I do think I'm crazy.
