Hey everyone - wanted to get some thought from the group on how to mix up my monthly home game tournaments. I am entering my first full year hosting and will be running a league point system to keep track of my group over the course of the year - but wanted to mix it up a little from the standard T-5000 unlimited re-buy/add-on (first 1.5hr) tourney I host. I know I can vary the re-buy to just one, no re-buy games - but are they other ways to mix it up? Does anyone else host different monthly tourneys, and what suggestions would you offer?

This will be 100% NLHE, two table, 16 total players with a 5 hour time slot.

Thanks in advance!

We do a successful unlimited rebuy tournament. Rebuys are allowed for the entire tournament

Two things I do with my NLHE tournaments ($10 buy-in, $5 rebuys the first hour):
1) Bad Beat: player who has the worst bad beat in the tournament gets free buy-in to next tournament (must use both hole cards and hand must go to showdown)
2) Bounty: Player who wins tournament is then the "bounty" in the next tournament. That player puts his $10 buyin in front of him, everybody wants to play at his table and it makes for some interesting calls...it's not about the money as much as bragging rights!

Pineapple tournament. Ante only. Bounty tournament
What is Ante only?

I like the bounty - I will have to add that to some of my games. On a $40 buy-in, is $5 bounty the right amount or would $10 be a stretch?

I like #1 - how do you keep track all game? Do you set a threshold? A's full K'?

We've done bounty tourney's two ways.

1: 40 and 10 (and 30 and 5)

2. The buy in for the tourney is 30. The entire buy in is your bounty. The only way to make loot is to knock people out.

An ante only tourney is just that. Every single player antes every single hand. There are no blinds. The antes go up every 20 minutes.

#2 is also called a slayer tournament, I generally try and do one of those around Halloween.

that's a better name for it. I didn't much care for it. I took second. Only knocked out three players (all in the same hand). For second place, I didn't get paid shit.

I usually would do something like 25% prize pool and 75% bounty for a slayer tourney.
I like the idea of splitting it out like that. I've never played a game like this, I imagine it could be interesting!

I have a chalkboard mounted in poker room and write down player's name and hand when someone loses. When that hand gets beat, I erase and post new information. There is no qualifier.....sometimes trips takes the bad beat but usually it's a straight or flush losing hand.

It is somewhat similar to the Pokerstars progressive knockout tournaments where for each player you knockout, 25% of that persons bounty gets added to your bounty. By the end of the tourney, the bounties are often worth far more than the prize pool.

So when playing this game do the bountys roll over to the winning player?
Example:

Player 3 beats Player 1 and takes his bounty of $20. Player 2 then beats Player 3 - does he win $20 (P3 bounty) or $40 (P3 and P1 Bounty)?

Usually these tournaments use special bounty chips; each player tries to accumulate extras. For example, you have busted two players so you get their bounty chips. When you are all-in, you toss your own bounty chip in with the regular chips. If you lose the hand, your bounty chip goes to the winning player. Afterwards, you cash your two bounty winnings.

Right - I have played a bounty tourney before - but the slayer tourney discussed above - is it the same concept, or does the bounty (or a percentage) roll over to the ultimate winner? Or is it the same structure as a normal bounty?

You can also play a survivors tournament, whereby play stops when a certain number of players are left. You start out with 20 players, and when the 6th player has busted, the remaining 5 players split the money equally; e.g. You can fix the pay-out number any way you like.

Just to be clear, in a slayer tourney, the bounty works the same as in a regular tourney, the entire bounty is the player's to keep and cash out at the end of the tourney.

I was just saying that the play is similar to the Stars progressive bounty tournies because in a slayer the bounty is in high proportion to the prize pool and thus people tend to play for the bounties rather than focusing on winning the tourney. I wouldn't try to run a live progressive bounty tourney because keeping track and the opportunity for cheating and keeping more bounties than they should would be a nightmare.
