Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any opinions on these chips.

https://www.discountpokershop.com/25pc-135g-monte-carlo-clay-poker-chips-colors-p-377.html

Was thinking of grabbing 600 as a relatively inexpensive way of determining if my crew enjoys limit. Would get all pink (5K) of course :-).

Does anyone have samples they might be able to sell me so I can have a look?

Are they similar to the old Cartamundi 'Casino Royale' chips from the movie of the same name?

Cheers,
Adam

They work fine as a cheap, large tournament set. I've played tourneys with them before and they help up pretty well with bi-weekly use for years.

Not sure I'd use them for cash games long-term, but if you're looking for a cheap, test-the-waters limit option, then just about anything would work for a couple sessions.

Some PCF'ers have also used these for relabels and other purposes. They're cheaper, look good, and at the same company.

Thanks mate, saw those too. Appreciate the opinion :-) Yes, just a temp thing, but can't bring myself to do dice chips. Ultimately, if proves popular, will go another route. :-)

These chips stand out from most others. Colors are bright, and they have a polished look IMO. These were the house chips in a weekly tournament I use to attend.

I've thing I'd add: there seems to be a number of Chinese manufacturers of these so quality may be very variable. They may look good, but the sample set I bought (about two years ago) felt poor - where the different edge spot colours meet, there's a noticeable 'bump' and sometimes the difference is almost sharp. I felt like I wanted to sand them down!

Also the glitter rings are very very prone to literally getting wiped off.

I know you said this was just a "test" set almost, but I think there might be better sets out there (Milano's, any of the weighted Claysmiths etc).

Thanks Wils, appreciate it mate, but over here Milanos are 50cAUD/chip and these are 20cAUD :-). Would probably get other labels done if we like them :-).

Another good option for testing out limit games is to pick up several racks of $1s from your local casino to use, and just borrow them. Return when done.

Haha, that would be novel if the local casino ones had any close resemblance to a poker chip. They use these thin unslugged plastic chips that weight about 2 grams for the ones and twos. They are only used for rake on the poker tables.

The Monte Carlo chips are actually great inexpensive chips, and far better than the $200 price would suggest for a set of 1000 chips + birdcage. As snob chippers we have very high standards, but for most normal players, the chips feel better than average (and some say even great). I actually prefer them to most china clay sets (with the exception of the Desert Palms CC)

I have some of these and they feel too heavy and sluggish because of the inlays. Furthermore, I've gotten real sick of the design which I liked a lot when I first got them. I'd recommend the be gen pro classics for a similarly priced chips

I have a set of Monte Carlos I use for regular cash games with friends and I often have comments from guys about how nice of a chip they are because "They're nice and heavy".
Chip snobs will tell you they're awful but their job is essentially a counter or score keeper in a game and at that job they are as capable as any other chip out there. I like how they look and they're CHEAP (especially considering the prices for "exotic" chips in Australia) so if you like them at all I say go get some.

Thanks all. I got some samples and I will probably go another direction at this stage :-).

Welcome @wan.7 , plenty of rain in T'ba mate? Nice and green I bet.

If you don't mind me asking, from where did you purchase the samples? The reason I ask is that I bought a full set from http://www.jackspoker.com.au/ and then coincidentally also received a sample from https://www.pokershop.com.au/ and the difference between the chips with quite extraordinary.

The ones from jacks are softer feeling, the edges are smooth but dull. Overall the chip feels pretty nice (for a cheap chip). I have found that with use these chips have improved in colour and the dull look has turned a more deep/attractive colour.

The ones from pokershop are very plastic feeling and the edges are rough but shinny. The chips are also a different shade of colour.

Overall the pokershop ones feel and look cheap, to the point where the could hardly be considered to be the same chip.

Curious to know where you got yours and what your impressions were.

I got a sample from Jacks and one from Iconic Poker Supplies. Both seemed about the same in feel except for a slight difference in the shade as you say. Also, there are different markings on the edges, so I think there may be two different 'runs' of the same chip with moderate differences.
