I wanted to ask around here how you handle balancing tables in a two table tourney. When my tables are unbalanced, I stop the timer and wait for the other table to complete the hand, and move the person from the more populated table to the table where someone busted out. Player selection is based on position from the button. Two seats behind is open, player from the other table in the same button position moves.

This weekend, moved a player using the guideline above and the next hand he immediately busted out. Went on a small rant about how it wasn't fair he had to move, didn't know the play style of the new table, yadda yadda yadda. I just wanted to see if the way I balance tables is good - or is there a better way?

Is this rule posted or ever announced? I feel you did right by the way you run your tourney, I usually have the dealer deal out one card to each player at the table Im take from and the lowest card moves.

What happens if that results in the moving player having to post a BB two hands in a row?

Good question, I usually have a couple of seats open when I am moving someone and I try to place them behind the button.. I have not ran into an issue YET..

This is why I do it the way I do - position doesn't change for the moving player - I feel this is the least disadvantage to all involved. I do have it posted - I think the guy was just sour he got beat right after the move.

This is how we do it as well. So far, it works. Anyone participating in a MTT should realize they could be asked to move as part of a table re-balance.

I think your method is fine as long as it's posted. FYI here's how Robert's Rules deals with moving players:

15. In button games, if a player is needed to move from a table to balance tables, the player due for the big blind will be automatically selected to move, and will be given the earliest seat due for the big blind if more than one seat is open.

I usually take the player who was just the dealer at the "heavy" table and move them to one spot behind the dealer at the "light" table. This way they're not coming to a new table with new players and immediately posting a blind, gives them a chance to see a few free hands if they want to.

^ That is the process we use, no exceptions. The clock is not stopped, but play is suspended at the short table until the player arrives.

As stated, if more than one seat is empty at the light table, the new player goes to the position that would post the big blind first. If that's immediately, even better (since he was due for the big blind already at the other table).

If he sits down to the left of the button (meaning the previous big blind just busted out), then he posts the small blind and play continues as normal. If the seat was already empty, then that means there is another open chair somewhere on the table -- and that's where he should go.

Same. Everyone needs to pay their blinds, esp with escalating levels. Good that you posted the rules, difficult to argue against fairness.

My players usually find a heartfelt rendition of La Boheme to be quite moving.

EDIT: It's Italian opera you unwashed heathens.
