I have a large number of poker chip sets, but I don't even have one that is complete. I am always looking for this to add-on, or compliment that set. It seems like a real problem. Anyone else feel like this , or am I the only nut job here ?

there is no fun if the hunt ends. "complete" is subjective, some would say owning 500 chips is a complete set, some think that is a good start for one denomination. If it makes you happy and does not control your life, then it is a hobby and gives you shit to do. If you spend all day searching every auction site, antique shop, and forum for more chips, then maybe you could pare it back to an hour or two, and find other shit to do with the rest of your day.

Then again, you are asking fellow addicts for advice, so ..... buy more chips?

I have gone through this with basically every casino set I've ever had. Eventually I just sold all my casino sets and stuck with my customs. Then I ended up starting a new set a few weeks ago and I'm back in the cycle again.

lol, I'm thinking you're not alone on a site of chip degenerates.

"Complete" is kind of a dirty work in any collecting hobby. I like to think of my individual sets as either "finished", "substantially complete", "Usable" and "Work in Progress"

I have a dozen or so sets...

...3 or 4 are what I would consider "finished" - either customs that I wouldn't add-on to or less expensive sets that I have for a particular reason and zero need to expand,

... half my sets I would consider "substantially complete" - I have enough of all chip denoms so that the set is perfectly useful for the reason I built it. Not actively looking to add to the set, but would add a few chips here or there if the right opportunity arose (getting less frequent with the chip prices these days),

.... a couple "Usable" sets that function OK for their purpose, but I'm actively looking to add to the set to make it better or expand its use to other games, and,

.... a couple "Work in progress" sets that are incomplete and currently don't function too well for anything, that I'm actively looking for pieces to bring the set to be usable or substantially complete.

I think it's quite clear that you are not the only nut job here.

Uh, I can hear you.

Tell me about it...

I just finished filling out my second rack of Riverside $25s...

...which displaced the two barrels of hundos, so now I'm looking for a couple more barrels of $25s and a barrel of hundos. Of course, when that happens, I'll decide the hundos are the better part of a full rack and might as well finish the rack. Then I'll have two stray barrels of $25s and want to finish that rack.

Don't even get me started on the fracs and $1s.

Sigh.

so . . . what do we do when the set hits 1,200 chips? or 1,600? or 2,000? Or lots more?

Would someone rather have two 1,000 chip sets or a single 2,000 chip set? (Of course the right answer is five+ sets, each at least 2,000 chips.) But if money is an issue - one huge set or two big sets or four adequate sets?

Hey! Not nice - though I do resemble that remark.

I decided to liquidate some sets so I put a set up on eBay last month. My first sale ever! Yay me!

I have since bought two sets and have added on to one of them :/

I have no self-control

I joined PCF back in July with the primary purpose of selling off my chips which had sat untouched in storage for almost 3 years. At the time I had about 7000 chips. As of last week, it was closer to 17000. Talk about a plan gone awry.

You're welcome

Yeah I feel the same way with my sets. Decided to give up on one completely and sell what I had of my Viva Las Vegas incomplete set.

You're welcome

You bear a certain personal, and significant, responsibility in my backfired plan. I believe it was shortly after joining PCF that you announced S@PIII. Once I looked through that thread, it became apparent that I needed to attend. And so it began.

i have sold off a bunch and got down to 4 sets and have only been adding to those but even then it is difficult to stop...like the fitz sale gengis has i just have to stay away from....i dont really need to add 650 more fitz quarters an fiddy cent chips to my 800 chip fitz set....

Yeah, I pared myself down to five (now six) sets, all of which were intended to be quality over quantity (except the Riversides, which are both). But I keep filling out/growing those sets. Hell, my "short-handed, small-stakes" Casbah Club set suddenly became more playable with the addition of some $5s, and now I'm looking for stacks of $25s. Damn TRK buttery goodness....

All of the above/Both?
1 set - 4000 chips
1 set - 3000 chips
1 set - 2600 chips
1 set - 2000 chips
1 set - 1000 chips

With big sets, it's all about having the right proportion that can be split into smaller playable sets in case you want to sell. When you have the right proportion, you can say they're done, until you find another rack.

looks like i'm not alone, but prices going through the roof has me worried for my chip future

Great topic... Has me thinking about my chip journey... Whether or not any of my sets are complete... Join me as I reminisce...

I started off with smaller sets that have grown into a few sets that are complete. And some that have shrunk to be complete. And a few sets that I've sold off or shrunk out of necessity (that could always use more chips).

Started off with a Milano setup. Initially got 600 of them, then moved quickly into around 1000 of them, then bumped that up to 1400, then up to 2400 at one point. I sold off a bunch, and now sit at around 1400, which is MORE than ideal for any use I would have of them. These are my traveling tourney chips now.

I snagged Some Mesquite Paulsons (my first Paulsons), but then Jim at TCR gifted me with some Benny's $1's to compliment my Mesquites. I loved the Benny's/Mesquite's western theme, but unfortunately the Mesquites did not have a readily playable breakdown. I sold off the Mesquites, and acquired more Benny's, then some more, then some more, and now I sit on a massive 2000 chip set of Benny's. I think this set is complete. I've passed up opportunities to procure more, simply because I have more than I'll ever need (I know, I used the "N" word)...

I also snagged a HUGE set of CPS chips (both cash and tourney). I followed it from the beginning, from it's initial incarnation, to the final order. I think I had ~3500-4000 chips. I sold off all these CPS chips to help fund my CPC order.

I also snagged Par-A-Dice chips and Point Defiance Paulsons from TCR sales. My PAD chips totaled around 700 chips, which was fine for a secondary cash set. I snagged around 1800 of the Point Defiance chips, which was supposed to be a nice epic 1/2 setup.

I suppose the PAD is complete. I've kept the PAD chipset intact, and passed on opportunities to add-on (it's a nice travel setup, when I'm willing to bring nice chips).

The Point chipset was broken up to help fund my CPC order. The set is no longer "epic" sized, but now it's a medium set (of around 700 chips). It's still decent for $1/2, but it rarely gets played any longer. I liked having an epic sized Point set, but funding the CPC's took priority. Had money been unlimited, I wouldn't have sold, so I suppose the set could be added onto, but

My Benny's setup is able to spread any game I host, so adding onto the Point set seems meh on the priority. This might be one of those sets I hold onto (collect) until I need to fund another CPC set (Fat Tire cash chips, anyone?).

As for my FT Customs, I think these are complete. I think they spread a 30 person tourney, which is more than I will normally host (with the exception of the MTTD). I can't see NEEDING to add onto this set, but who knows... If money were no object, I would likely add onto a few denoms, fill up racks, etc...

I feel the same way with "most" sets. Trouble is, you get new ones in whatever denoms are available, then you need others to balance the numbers.

I have a few that I'm finished with.

the feeling sucks, especially when the chip prices are through the roof

It is the journey that matters; never really the destination.

The fun of collecting is looking forward to getting the next thing and marveling at what you've collected so far.

It's kind of nice with chips because you can always sell extras when your collection has its own bedroom in the house.

I need to do some oiling and now my drawer has room for 500 more. So I'm not done.

That's why I am leaning towards only trading nice chips for nice chips. That's the only way to add onto sets unless you can afford the nosebleed prices nowadays. Did you guys see the $455 price tag for the rack of mint PCA .50 secondaries...I could never have afforded that when I first started on this chip journey.

Oh dear god. Look at those minty blue birds. I feel queezy.
