This happened at @Highli99 game the other night. we are playing Limit 7 Card Stud. Betting is going along fine. We get to 7th street, and the dealer realizes that he has pulled his 2 original down cards and put them into the muck. He looks at his last card, and technically has a playable 5-card hand.

Can he play this 5-card hand as is, or is his hand considered dead?

Generally, a hand at showdown must contain the correct number of cards for the game being played.

Hoever, RROP does contain some language regarding exceptions (in Stud, I think) -- but I don't have access atm, and don't recall specifics.

Looked it up -- a Stud hand missing the 7th river card may be ruled live.
I always enjoy Dave's passing down of wisdom to the young padawans. And I always read it imagining his gruff Yoda-like voice in my head.

But otherwise, a stud hand at showdown with fewer than 7 cards is dead.

I remember reading the explination on this, maybe I will read it later. But the idea of this exception is to protect the player from a dealer accidentally scoopimg a river card he didn't pull into his hand. And in situations where a player is strong on 6th Street, the player grabbing the river card is more likely to forget.

I guess this must have happened more than once when stud was popular.

That said in terms of the original ruling. There is no excuse for not protecting the initial cards. I am with everyone else. The hand is dead. At best I am going to permit a refund on river action if there has been any.
