We usually play $0.25/$0.50, but a few of the guys are itching for a high roller game. "High roller" for my crew is $1/$2 :P

I have enough chips to slap together a decent $1/$2 set (and the new Matsui plaques will come in handy), but I am wondering if there is a ballpark number I should be aiming for as a total bank. I'm planning on 8-9 guys, and the buyins will be $80 min and $300 max. I figure I'm gonna have a solid bell curve across that spread.

I'm looking at $5,000 in my bank so far... planning for a couple of rebuys from a few fellas, will that be enough?

Roughly $555.55 per player for 9 so maybe. Depends on how wild they get.

Lots of help aren't I?

This really depends on the game. I play in two games, one needs a $10,000+ bank, I bring a 600 chip set with $13,500+ bank. The other game might not hit $3,000 on a slow night. I don't know if I ever have put a $100 chip in play, some nights I don't use $25s.

Will $5,000 be enough for your game? <shrug> that is so hard to say. $5,000 works out to be ~$500 to $600 per player. That seems like a reasonable place to start.

I can't imagine that you would need more chips for 1 table of 1/2. Even if Crazy comes to town, a few others will win. I think you are OK too. For any cash set I build, I use 2 racks of everything and 1 rack of the highest denom (.25/1/5/25/100/500). Full racks for OCD and regardless of any home cash game amount, this will work. It's overkill really.

For years I hosted a weekly $1/1 NLHE game (uncapped, buy-ins were generally $100-300). Our total bank for the night generally ranged from $3500-$5500. Once or twice it was higher, occasionally lower.

That said, all of my chip sets I used in those games had at least a 10k bank just in case ;)

As Doc said above, it's basically impossible to give an accurate answer without knowing the details of your particular game, but as far as a general rule of thumb for big bet $1/2 games, I typically want to have a full buy-in of $5s per player for the maximum number of players I ever expect to have, another 2 buy-ins per player in $25s (and $5s if possible) and then another 3 buy-ins per player in $100s or $500s. Yes, the 3 buy-ins of $100s/$500s is overkill in the vast majority of games, but they're there to ensure you're covered.

Assuming 10 players (I know you said, 8-9, but let's go crazy) and average buy-ins of $250, that would mean, at a minimum:

200 (1)
460 (5)
120 (25)
75 (100)

Personally, I'm rounding up to full racks, so you'll end up with a nice even 1000-chip set:

200 (1)
500 (5)
200 (5)
100 (100)

Of course, I would throw in another rack of $5s to make sure I can include at least some workhorse chips in everyone's first rebuy. And then I wouldn't want to have 1100 chips - gotta keep it even - so I'd add either a rack of $1s or a rack of $25s depending on your personal preference.

This is similar to what most of my sets have, and I think it's a solid break down. Like jbutler, I like a lot of $5 chips (but I don't really like $100s on the table), so most of my sets are closer to 200/800/400 (1/5/25).
