Sneaky Pete is a new show on Amazon - it's pretty good. Giovani Ribsi stars as a con man trying to get together cash to pay off his debt to a mid-level crime boss, played by Brian Cranston.
Cranston's character runs an upscale underground poker room. The first time we get a glimpse of his poker room, we don't get a good look at the chips, but you can hear them. Clink clink clink. An episode or two later, there's a good poker room scene, and sure enough - plain old generic as crap dice chips. And what's even more annoying is they actually sprang for some really nice looking poker tables. But the beautiful high-end tables are covered in crap-ass clinky dice chips.

Prop departments like them because they are cheap, easy to obtain & reusable. They don't have to worry about copyright issues if they don't put something on the chip. Only chip geeks (ie: US) really look at the chips anyway, they are just considered a background prop and not highly visible in their minds, unlike the table which is a big, highly visible prop. Only if a true chipper/player makes the film and is willing to spend the extra time/money for authenticity will you ever see real chips that aren't "true casino weight ;)" in play.

This show is definitely on my list to watch.

And in a stunning thumb to the nose at continuity, the poker room upgraded its chips at some point in the season to slightly less cheapass 8-stripe plastic chips with some familiar looking olive branch wreath inlay.

I was a little disappointed by sneaky pete. I was excited going in, but for a story centered on a con man with a back drop of an illegal poker room, I was hoping they'd do a little more/better with those 2 elements.

I'll hold back my specific complaints, as I don't want to spoil the show, but it fell a little short for me.

I agree. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't call it great. And that review linked above, praising Cranston? I loved him in Breaking Bad, but I didn't find him very believable as the crime boss.

I thought cranston, like the show in general, was good not great. Some scenes were better than others. The poker was probably better than average for a TV show though.

Just finished this series yesterday ..
Overall, I would recommend the show, it is worth the watch.

The scenes of Dice chips and Poker sized Paper Cards being used in a high roller room made me cringe..
In a later episode scene it became some sort of other shitty heavy slugged plastic chip with a design on them, along with the same crap cards ...
I've had a bit of experience with low level NY TV/Movie prop dept "grunts/assistants" purchasing from my business ( non poker related retail), they are told, for hypothetical example, to "keep a low budget, go out shopping & buy for a needed scene " 500 poker chips", 6 decks of cards, a set of dishes and a radio " or whatever, & they then go shopping & bring the stuff back .." ..
It's rare when there seems to be a consultant , such as on Rounders, who knew and was involved enough to make sure they had custom clay chips, Kem plastic bridge cards & the like..

I'm a few episodes in, was really excited, love Brian Cranston, but my attention has been waning. The cheap crappy dice chips might have pushed me over the edge too, SMH.

In other news I watched Vegas Vacation for the first time all the way through the other night and was shocked/pleased to see they used actual (live?) Mirage chips in the gaming scenes. This is super rare from most gambling scenes I've ever seen, wonder how they swung it.

The clinking sound of the chips in the trailer made me cringe.
I hate when a show or movie gets a chance to show off some chips and they go the dice route.
I'm sure there is no security risk with using chips that can be purchase at Walmart.
Crazy

I wouldn't hold it against them for using the dice chips, most movies use them and most people aren't going to notice them anyway. The gambling scenes are secondary to the main cons going on anyway. I loved the first series, but I had a hard time believing that Marius could fool everyone, let alone anyone, into thinking he was Pete. He doesn't look, sound or even try to act like him. Looking forward to watching season 2. Disbelief on full suspension.

Haven't seen it, but I gather the show's ratings would TRIPLE if they got some nice denominated ceramics or CC's instead. :D

Ribisi is great in this role.

Binged watched it last night and finished the new season. Not as great as season 1 but still good. I'd give 4 out of 5 stars. Now have to wait 2 years for season 3.

Been watching for the past 3 days & just finished it tonight. Haven't been drawn into a series like this since Boardwalk Empire. Great show! Can't wait for the next season.

It was an ok show, already seen the first season. Right now watching Season 2 of Jessica Jones, then will get to Sneaky Pete season 2
