Hi there, while I save up for a nicer, future set (hoping for CPC Rounder chips), I narrowed down my first set of chips to one of the following:

- nexgen pro
- milano
- scrolls

I think leaning towards the scrolls… are there any other sets that I should be aware of in the similar price range? Thanks for your time!

Hello there,

I have a quite a few Milano and Nexgen Pro and i will say I prefer the Milano but they are hard to find sometimes. You should look into some of the chips on Apache if you like the CC i.e. Majestics, Royals, Dunes. I much prefer these due to the availability of Milano and the way the Nex-gen chip off and lose their color over time. The ceramics (scrolls) are much more resilient but the newer molds are far superior in my opinion.

If you do prefer ceramics like the scrolls, the best option is the group buy here for options and pricing. I do have a set of Empire Ceramics from Apache which are nice card molds but you cannot beat the diversity of options provided here on the monthly buy. The new hybrid web mold are awesome!

Search for the group buys and you can get some cheap samples quicky from Justin.

I think Nexgens are underrated. ThePokerStore.com is selling Nexgen Remix Pro Clay Poker Chips. They just started selling these. Not sure the difference between these new ones and the old ones but I have both and like them. Good weight and sharp edges. Cheaper than Apache Poker Chips too. However I’m looking to buy Royal Card Rooms from Apache.

Old school Nexgens yes (Lucky Bees), Pros (the remix from Poker Store) meh…

What did you end up with?

I've bought a few samples from Apache, discount poker ship, the poker store and some others. I just ordered 1000 Nexgen Remix Pro from The Poker Store. They should be arriving today!

What did u think of the nexgens? would love to know how it compares to far more premium chips like anything from apache: dunes, majestics, etc, or even cermaics like Tina or Taj.

Here are some of the sample sets. My game has not needed anything about the red $5 yet, but I still included the $25.

Here are some of the factors that went into my decision:

  • Chip Color: The Majestics are the only ones here that I don't like. I don't like the Majestic 25¢ color and the red on the 5$ seems too dull. They also seem too similar to have mixed together. I only have a sample set so I didn't get to see what a pot would look like with some of each, maybe it's fine.
  • Chip Material: I actually like the feel of the Nexgens more than the clay (Royal, Majestic) chips. I can imagine most people would disagree with this.
  • Chip Size: I have trays and cases for the regular 39mm chips, I've played with this size, people (that I've played with) are mostly used to this size.
  • Inlay design: Nexgens win here simply because they don't have a name on them. If I have a name on my chips, I want it to be something custom.
  • Price: Nexgens win this by a mile.
If these were all the same price, I'm not sure what I would have done. Empire probably would have won in that case. The Monaco chips are great but I think I prefer the black background on the inlay.

I am for sure going to get a set of custom Tina ceramics some day here but I didn't want to rush into that. I also needed something to play with right now, not two or three months from now. So I consider this a temporary set of chips. I'm very happy with these chips and don't feel the need to be in any hurry to replace them. Now I get a chance to make sure I'll have regulars that will keep coming back for my home game before I spend more money on chips.

Agreed with Nexgen’s, usually my recommendation for better than dice (about 2.5 x more expensive but still affordable) and ~half the cost of Tina hybrids. I like the textured feel they have and don’t feel as ‘plasticky’ as other chips in the same price range.

I’ve got a set of a 1,000 of the older Nexgens, my only minor issue is that the color on some don’t look that vibrant or bright and appear faded (they were like that when I got them, like the 500 for example). Looks like from the pictures the newer Nexgen Remix Pro have a different mix and appear brighter.

Probably worth buying some samples for $20 to feel the difference between the Tina Hybird and Nexgen as it’ll be subjective, but then it’s $120 for 500 Nexgens... Tina Hybrids will have a better label and potentially feel, think the edges will be a little more rounded, so easier to shuffle. The nexgen edges were always sharp and squared off.

Recommend the hybrids vs card mold if you go Tina path

Yeah for sure, if I go with tinas I'd def get a hybrid, I love the mirage, sunset, and dunes with look with the web or the greeks mold, in your opinion some people actually prefer the nexgens over them? I usually assumed people justify the nexgens for price but if its a toss up I might still get samples but am definitely favor affordability.

Thank you for that detailed answer, I appreciate it. I think I'll give the nexgens a try since they're significantly cheaper than everything else everyone compares them to.

I think most would recommend Tina Hybrids vs Nexgen tbh. There’s usually a few cheap samples floating around. But then most folk on this forum will recommend saving for the ‘better’ chip, cry once approach at most levels etc.

If you’re looking for a playable set around $100 I’d say Nexgen, if you can double that to the $200ish-$250 range, then you get a lot more design options with the Tina Hybrids.

@flamingflux27 Just a couple of notes about the Nexgen pro:

If you are going to store these in racks, buy some 67.7 mm racks. 100 will not fit in most racks as they are too thick, just like CPC. Same with the closed racks from Justin's group buy. There is a pic comparing a barrel to Paulson to Nexgen.

The unicorn chips from Versa seem to be identical in material and dimensions. I did mix some of these in with the Nexgen Pro to replace some of the faded chips as @Kam mentioned above.

The nexgen really pop with a UV light and my gf and sister love to play with them because of this. (they hate most of the other chips lol)

Good luck and have fun!
