I've been taking regular trips to Vegas over the years, and even though a lot of the mystique of discovering Vegas is gone, I still enjoy every aspect of it. However, with so many poker hubs out there now, I'm looking for other options that might be fun to discover.
Options:
Vegas
Florida
Texas
Cali - probably not because of what I've heard about the high rake in low-stakes games
Northeast (Boston/NH/Conn/AC) - Less likely because I don't like the cold and will probably be travelling in Feb.
Any I'm missing????
I only play cash games, and will likely be only at the lowest stakes NLHE (1/2 or 1/3), so rake structure is important (Cali prob bad here), but that's about all that will matter a lot.
The other major factor for me will be walkability and access to other sights/activities besides poker. I love being able to take walks around Vegas during downtime or on the way to a good restaurant. If I stay for 4-5 days I'm going to need a much better restaurant selection than a typical casino food court/sports bar setup, so walking distance/short drive to decent restaurants is pretty important. Same for other non-poker activities. Vegas has a million things to do on/around the strip or downtown, but are there any good rooms in FL or TX that won't require a long car ride to get to something fun?
I don't play marathon sessions so when I make these trips I might play a few hours before lunch, take like 4-6 hours off for something fun + lunch/dinner stops, and back to poker in the evening/night. I'm pretty flexible on what that "something fun" can be, especially if it's in a new city I've never been. Could be a museum, shopping, beach or pool time, just sightseeing, etc.
I guess my thrill for going to Vegas has waned over the years and I'm hoping there's somewhere that might be a nice change of pace this year.
Lastly, maybe if you're local to one of these spots you'd be up for a meetup?
