Newbie here... I was thinking about hosting a poker night at my home and started looking into buying a set. As I looked beyond the local retailers and wholesellers, I somehow ended up here... reading about harvesting chips and ultrasonic cleaning. I'd have to say, learned something new today :)

I joined a year ago, just hoping to find a place to offload my set of slugged chips that I was unhappy with. I was going to replace them with slugged chips that look better. Now I have over 3000 chips, including china clays and Paulsons, plus a bunch of shuffle stacks and samples.

It is certainly a rabbit hole! Get samples!

And welcome to PCF!

Welcome to the thunder dome! I've been here a little over a month and in that time already have around 2500 new chips of varying sets. I really enjoy nice ceramics for home use and I got my first set of Paulson's on here! Have fun and soak up the knowledge. Lots of amazing folks on here.

I'm impressed that you have local retailers for poker chips. The last one around here went belly-up years ago.

then again, I guess there are local retailers everywhere. Sure they call themselves 'casinos' but we know the game.

So you haven't got to hot dog rollers yet?

Welcome to PCF!

Hello and welcome, you said you were looking for chips and as I am sure you will be told many times, get samples first. Then, after deciding on your first of MANY sets, take a look at your bank account, enjoy the large balance because no one buys just one set.

Really appreciate the warm welcome!

I wish I didn't look for them... at least it'll compliment my popcorn maker.

I saw enough members mention this that it's ingrained in my head!

I've ordered samples of the Tiki Kings (along with a plaque), Dia de los Muertos (love the colors and the edge spots), and 15 CPC mold samples. I watched a few reviews on YouTube and not a huge fan of how the ceramics sound compared to Paulson's and Key West, but they seem to be good value. Skipping over the China Clays and anything with slugs.

One thing I'm still trying to figure out is the denominations.

I'll most likely go with a T25 Base with 600 chips- with the breakdown of:
T25 x 160
T100 x 160
T500 x 80
T1K x 140
T5k x 50
T25k x 10

This should hold me over a while :)

Don't limit yourself to a hard number. Need will depend on blind schedule and number of players. We can help with that too.

Thanks WedgeRock, any advice on the best place to start figuring out the right questions? I’ve been reading up and received my samples today. I’d say the ceramics are actually pretty nice, but the CPC clays sound much better. A little on the light side imo though.

I joined you in going down the rabbit hole myself today and I can already tell it's going to be hours of research to figure out what chips I need. Maybe my bi monthly low stakes game doesn't deserve nice chips but they are going to get them!

Do you have a blind schedule? If not, try adopting one that someone else already uses...no need to reinvent the wheel.

How many players?

No blind schedule yet - I've been following this thread:
https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/blinds-for-a-25-50-tournament.37805/

This is the one I've been gravitating towards, using starting stacks of 10k, typically probably 6-8 players, with support up to 20. I don't think I'll be hosting 20 player games any time soon, but if I go with ceramics it'll be easy to order anyway.

25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
10 min break race off $25 chips
200/400
300/600
400/800
500/1000
10min break & end of rebuys/late reg
600/1200
800/1600
1000/2000
1200/2400
20 min break to eat and race off $100 chips
1500/3000
2000/4000
3000/6000
4000/8000
5000/10000
Break etc....

Of course I'm hear to learn though, so any suggestions welcome :)

You wont need 25k denominations -- better off adding those 10 chips to the 5k pile.

Welcome and good luck ! This place is addicting but I love it ! All the help and advice you'd ever want is here. Very knowledgeable and friendly people !!

You didn't mention hot dog rollers so keep reading you haven't scratched the surface yet :p
