When to use the term NUT

  • When the hand in question is/was the best at the current time

  • When the hand in question is guaranteed to win regardless of future streets

  • NUT BOAT is fine if it can be beaten by quads+

  • NUT FLUSH is fine on a paired board

  • NUT STRAIGHT is fine on a paired or flushed board

  • NUT SET is fine on a straightened or flushed board

  • Anytime your opponent is drawing dead

  • I don't care, these things don't bother me

Pet Peeve Poll :)

Decided to make this thread when I saw someone say they folded the nuts on the turn when they held a random J on a AKQTcccc board because the guy who bet had A9hh... admittedly I can see how some may see it as not being completely incorrect either because a) the J makes the best straight or b) the villain would be drawing dead (to a flush or broadway chop) but in my eyes there is a world of difference between folding what turned out to be the best hand and anything remotely resembling the term "nut".

This one doesn't REALLY bother me like others that drive me up the wall (FU ALL DAY) but I do tend to find myself slightly annoyed when I hear guys using the term NUT when it's really not... the one that I hear more than any other is a hand reaching showdown and someone says "nut flush" when the board is paired. While I understand they mean they hold the best possible flush it is my humble opinion that the term NUT is really only fitting for a hand that can not be beat at the current time regardless of anyone's holdings.

I voted a) the best possible hand at the current time.

edit: hero most certainly did not have the nuts in the thread you referenced - at least not the way I see it.

You forgot the "nut no pair" when you have a hand that can only be beat if your opponent hit the board.

Example: you have KJ with a board of AQ972.

Esfandiari calls this the "nut nothing".

Also, nut low is missing.

Perhaps you don't care about these important and correct uses of the term nut.

Also, nut can be used to describe other things besides hand rankings.

Jen is the nut dealer.
Jet skiing is the nuts.

Etc.

I have caught myself (or on several occasions others have caught me) declaring my hand the nut flush when in fact a straight flush could beat my hand. I have decided to try not to declare my hands "the nuts' because I am often wrong.

It doesn't matter to me, except to the extent some random non-relevant or incorrect nut statement makes me do a double-take at the board on showdown and that annoys a little. I generally have patience with people misreading the board since I do it every so often too.

I vote best at the time.

And since I was the one who posted your example, my hand was the best at the given time, knowing the hole cards of the other player. I folded it, because I didn't have all the information, lol

The term is used rather liberally around these parts. I hear it all the time, in hands when someone has pocket deuces, for instance, and it gets checked around, and it's obvious the other player has zilch. The player might anounce, "I have the nutz", meaning they're 100% confident their hand is the best. It's not done in a duchey manner, just amongst friendly opponents who might play each other often. I've heard the term so often, it doesn't bother me in the least how people use I, unless they're attempting to angle shoot, or slow roll.

I use the term to describe a falling object that nearly kills a fellow poker player, preceded by "coco-" in southern climates.

Ahhh, this explains the sensitivity to the term... :whistling:

So what do we think about the ultra nuts vs the plain nuts??

I think the term "nutz" has some qualifiers... Like "stone cold nutz" means royal flush or the best possible hand given the board on the river, or a hand that can not be beat, no matter what cards come in later streets. Like flopping quad aces, etc... I think...

I played last night, and in one hand, I had J9 r. Flop comes 78Tr. I call that flopping the nutz, as in that street, I have the best possible hand.

The turn was 78TQ, and my hand was still the best hand possible. I 3-bet shoved (for $90) and got two callers. The river was an 8 (pairing the board), I figured there's no way I was good against two players, and when I announced "I had the nuts until the river". Turns out the best hand I was against was 2pr...

Flopping quad aces can get run down, even with 3 aces on the board. Royal flush and steel wheel are still possible.

I only use it jokingly.

All in with Ace rag pre-flop?

"I'm not folding the nuts there, bro."

I voted 2. But would also consider someone saying I have the nut straight even if there are flush possibilities.

Also don't go all in and declare the nuts then have your opponent show a boat when you really only have the nut flush.

Because of this discussion I did tell k9dr last night that I had the second nut (pause) flush that failed to come in on the river after he called my bluff.
