What’s your preference and why plz :) octagon/circle or ellipse/oval. Someone plz post pics if you have any, on my phone at the moment!

Octagons and circles are always better when it comes to sight lines and sociability. Number of players and room shape/size will affect your choices of oval vs others. But I think the most useful thing I could say is that big ovals should be avoided for self-dealt games.

I went with an 8max oval table, mainly because of where it’s located in room. With the top on it becomes great for board games too, as some of them require a lot of sideways room. I do like how with octagon/circle tables you are able to really see all the players and stacks better.

It depend on how big your poker group playing if number are 6 or below circle is better for social-ing and dealing

If you usually play full ring your only choice is oval table as player can sit more comfortable together

Another thing to take into consideration is your living space or the room size,
Some place may be too square or too small for oval table

Do you have pics? I’m curious as to see comparisons between the 8max oval and standard sized. Ty!!

Oval is best. You can fit more players if you need to, and if you have less players, just don't have people sit on the ends of the oval. Everyone is then basically just as close to each other as they would be on a round table. Therefore, best of both worlds.

That’s a really good point!

I also have an 8-max oval (messy at the moment) which, at 68x48, is kinda close to round. Sorry no pics with people yet, since I still haven’t hosted this year, grumble.

Answer depends greatly on your game & space. A large 8 person round or octagon is, IMHO, the perfect table for a social, self dealt cash game. They're comfortable and very easy to deal at from all seats. The two big downsides are (A) it can be a tough reach to drag a pot because the table is so wide and (B) they take up more overall real estate in the room, which can be extra tough to deal with in the NYC area.

For pretty much any other situation, especially if you often have more than 8 players per table, ovals work much better.

I run a mix of tourneys (more so) and cash games, so I have two 10 man oval tables. If I had the room (both while in play and in storage), I would build a big 58" round table for mixed game / cash nights. But you've been to my house, that ain't happening :D

My 2¢ worth.

Only solution I can think of for you, time to get a bigger house hahaha.

On a serious note, thanks for the advice! I won’t be buying a table yet but I’m just gathering opinions for when I do :)

My preferences are:

Round for all self-dealt games and for mixed games.

Any shape for regular flop games (e.g., hold'em and Omaha) with a dedicated dealer.

Octogan functions similarly to round, but the corners can be annoying with anything other than 2, 4, or 8 players. I much prefer round. BTW, octagon tables are excellent for mahjong.

I have a short oval, 44 x 66, which seats up to 8 players. Love the table, but this is so sad:

For 6 max with a rotating deal, round is the best. Not sure if a bigger round for 8 players would do well as people may not be able to drag in pots easily. Here's a pic of my old table from chanman. It was awesome!
