Just built this octagonal table (about 50" longest dimension) and would love some recommendations for a base. I store this in a small garage so would like to fold or take the base apart for storage. Are folding legs good enough or should I build/buy a pedestal that I can detach easily as well? Would love some feedback from anyone that has done something similar. Thanks for your time!

There are a few "it depends" to this I think.

How heavy would the top be if detached from the legs? Do you need to do this alone or will you always be able to get a second pair of hands? Would it be easy to get from storage to playing room or is it tricky, stairs for example? How easy it is to move around, regardless of what sort of legs it has, is the key, I'd probably end up using a simple dolly. (I build my table so it came apart into pieces I could manage on my own).

With respect to the legs personally I'd look at a pedestal rather than folding legs for both practical and aesthetic reasons. If the table top is heavy enough you don't really need to fix it in place, only enough to stop it tipping went leaned on, but that's more to do with the spread of the legs and the contact surface than anything else. I don't fix my table to it's base at all and it's as solid as a rock.

The two halves sit on the table and once the rail is added it's a single heavy top that doesn't move a jot. You could achieve the same with batons fixed to the underside of your (presumably single piece) top with a pedestal something like this, with a square or x shaped thingie to rest the top on.

That's what I would do anyway.
