So, I have a mini-obsession with casino plaques.

How would you use a set of them? I need justification for buying a set. I can see using plaques as the one largest denomination in a set, and just having a couple of plaques on the table. But what would you possibly use a set of plaques for, like, multiple denominations?

Please help justify my obsession.

You could use different shapes and sizes to have maybe 4-5 distinct plaques on the table. High denom set obviously. Yes I have thought about it too...

I use $20s and $100s in the set below (added 10 more $20s) quite often. I am not sure this qualifies as a set, but I have 30x$20 and 10x$100, and usually get all of the $20s in play and 3 or 4 $100s. My poker peeps LOVE playing with plaques.

I also have Dragonara plaques, and have some Casino Royal plaques. I have had the hardest time figuring out how to get the Royals in play, but I like having them:D

Go for it! You will love them!!(y)

One word of caution though. At least for me, the quality of the plaques directly impacts my level of enjoyment. I started out buying ceramic plaques....mehhh....I was indifferent about them. Almost never played with them.

I bought the Dragonara plaques and really liked them. Then I picked up the Matsui $20 and $100 plaques in a GB and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEM!! The quality and feel of the plaques is superior to other plaques I have. I almost passed because of the price, but am really glad I didn't

Good luck!!

Yes I had T 10K T25 and t100k plaques in my zombie tourney set.

I used the 10k plaques in the 100k starting stacks.

I'd have kept them if I hosted tournaments :(

I have some T5K Egyptian plaques (made by Chipco) that I used with my Paulson Pharaoh's back when I used to host tournaments. The players loved them.

More recently I picked up ten $100 Matsui plaques to use in a limit set. Unfortunately, I haven't hosted a game since they arrived.

A few years ago I watched a poker game in Monte Carlo, i think, where they played with plaques. I remember thinking that it looked cool.

My philosophy: Buy them. Play with them. If you don't like them, you can always sell them later.

Seeking Alpha nailed it - plaques, like chips, vary wildly based on materials. The Matsuis are just awesome, but I never get the hundos into play, so the Matsui plaques are still waiting to debut.

I have a tournament set that uses MSK plaques as well. The starting stacks have T100,000 plaques in them, and T500,000 and T1,000,000s are available for color-ups. The 2 color-up plaques are the same size, both larger than the T100,000.

A lot of people seem to think that each plaque should be a different size, but...
  • It creates storage problems
  • The largest denominations don't tend to be available in large quantities. Different sizes would look messy with one jumbo plaque, 2 medium plaques and 6 smaller plaques.
A number of players like this set the best, but at least one likes it the least, Therefore It all comes down to personal preference. Come out to SSSS II and I'll put the plaques in play on Wednesday, just for you.

Funny you should post this today....

I was just asked on Saturday by a couple of the local players if there were any complete sets of tournament plaques, and if so, did I have one.

There are: several overseas casinos have multiple hi-denom plaques, and the fantasy ceramic Formal plaques have denoms ranging from $100 up to $1,000,000 -- plenty to build a decent tourney set.

I have plaques designed in four of the most commonly produced varieties, in several sizes: glossy- and matte-finish rectangle ceramic (Sun-Fly), rounded corner ceramic (Sun-Fly), and rectangle acrylic (MSK and Matsui). I also have samples of GOCC's white plastic base plaques.

Each serves a function with varying degrees of quality (and relative cost). The glossy finish ceramics are by far my least favorite, and the Matsui plaques stand head and shoulders above the others I own.

I'd love to have a full two-table high-denom tournament set of acrylic plaques from B&G, Abbiatti, or Matsui, but am unwilling to spring for the cost of such a set.

Oversized chips are better than plaques IMO. I owned a couple hundred Matsui plaques with my PNY set as high denom alternatives, but I felt they were unwieldy.

I hate the idea of using two plaque denoms in in the same game -- would never do it.

Now $100 plaques and 43/44mm octagonal $20s in a small stakes game sounds fine...

Perhaps to be used as bounty, but i would not mix them with other chips

Curious. How do the MSKs compare to the Matsuis? I assume they are not quite as good quality wise, but the difference in price is so dramatic.

They are worlds apart, even with the recent MSK quality improvements and new options (which also caused the price difference to significatly decrease). No longer a budget option.

Using plaques for high denom chip or as a tourney bounty both make sense. I think having more than one denom of plaque at the table is silly. The whole point of the plaque being special is that it is the singular super high denom thing in play.

To be fair, I only needed 5 of my largest (and third) plaque. The don't even have to come out, but since it's denominated at 1 million, it's a very popular plaque. Nothing like dropping a single plaque while holding your pinky to the corner of your mouth to make an obvious raise to 1 million dollars.
