I have a big blind spot around the introduction of casino-grade plastic chips, looking for info on the following questions as regards Bud Jones, Abbiati, Gemaco, B&G, Matsui, etc...
  1. Is Nylon the primary component of these chips? As compared to ABS or other types
  2. The similarity between chips is very close... was there a company that made the machines that make these chips, that sold to each of these companies? Or a patent they all licensed? Or did injection molding just develop to a point where it was widely accessible to anyone
  3. Are they injection molded in multiple phases? Or one injection-molded core that gets finished some other way? Does anyone know the steps in this manufacturing process? We've all seen the color samples that show the different layers...
Looking for anyone who knows the history here! Or perhaps there's a good resource that explains it all... thanks all :)

GPI showing slugged injection molding first step:

Another video showing the molds, and some kind of edge insert that presumably creates a cavity that is later filled

Casino multi-layered plastics as well as "solids," home multi-layered slugged, etc...

You, sir, are the true definition of the term "chip masochist". You are diving into a pool of pain.....
Guys guys, I'm just asking questions here...

Hey @BGinGA

I hate to hijack OP but are you ghosting me?

Hijack away! Flood the thread with all your knowledge! Or wacky conspiracy theories (there's gotta be some good poker industry conspiracies right???)...

WHAT BIG CLAY DOESN'T WANT YOU TO KNOW...

I did despair a bit coming across an eBay listing with like 6 additional cheap plastic molds I hadn't seen before, at least one with a legit casino hotstamp on it.

I suppose partly what I'm looking for is something like "you can differentiate a Nylon vs an ABS vs and XYZ chip via a simple hardness/scratch test using a simple scientific kit from Amazon..."

Or "a nylon chip will flex a bit before cracking, whereas an ABS one will simply crack without any flex..."

Neither of the above are supported, I just made them up as hypothetical simple home tests for determining what's what... I pray there's such a test...
