I'm about to mount the support piece on my current table build. My last build used the glued-and-screwed method, which essentially makes it permanent.

Is there any justification for using t-nuts/inserts and screws instead?
Is there any real benefit to removing the support piece in the future?

If you glue that piece on how would you ever remove the playing surface piece if need be?
EDIT: Nevermind, I see that base IS your playing surface. But still if you glue that extra piece on and someday you want to replace the felt it would be that much harder.

Glue & Screw = Permanent forever
Insert & Screw = Basically permanent but you do have the ability to take it apart for some unknown reason in the future.

IMHO I like to leave myself that option if I ever need to take it apart even though today I can't think of why I would.
(Especially if you plan to keep the table long term)

Felt is surface-mounted with spray adhesive and perimeter staples using the Chanman method, which doesn't require wrapping any edges.

So felt replacement just requires removal of the rail and taking out about 20-30 staples. And all of the work is done "from the top" of the table. The felt literally just "sits on top" of the plywood/foam, and is mainly held on by the adhesive, gravity, and the pressure of the rail.

Here's a pic before I cut off all the excess...

Yea. That makes sense. No need to go permanent if there's no real benefit.

Thanks for helping me think this through.

The only drawback to gluing and screwing (from the underside) is that your connection is then heavily relying on the strength of the glue and the engagement of the drywall screws in the wood (more so the glue). This is likely strong enough. The only force that would be present to break this connection is if you attempt to lift the table from the outer rim.

If you through bolt it with tee nuts, your connection is more robust in that in order to break it, you have to break the screw... or pull the head through the wood... additionally, it is removable.

If I were connecting this on a fresh build... I would use tee nuts. If I were adding it on like you are now... I would likely glue and screw (or staple). Make sure your surfaces are clean and freshly sanded. This will ensure the best glue adhesion.
