Last year, I had the idea of ordering a new CPC cash set by the end of 2024. When I thought about the inlay issue, the decision was made within seconds. As we had a spectacular vacation in Iceland last year, I asked my wife what she would think if we immortalized one of the highlights of our trip on the inlay: Puffins? Her enthusiastic reaction within a fraction of a second was almost logical and so it came about that we would use the puffin as the main theme for the inlay design.
What I initially had in mind was to use the puffin as a kind of pictogram to make it look as clean as possible. I had already found various possibilities for the structure, but in the end I stumbled across a vector graphic of a flying puffin that immediately inspired me. The $10 for the file was very well invested. This time I also wanted shaped inlays, red denominations and a font that looked like brush strokes and I found what I was looking for relatively quickly. Thanks to Ken @kk405 for his input on the background color - I didn't want it to be pure white, and he gave me good advice on how to make it better.
I chose a small color gradient from white in the middle to slightly greyish on the outside to give the inlay a little more depth. This worked particularly well on the 25ct and the $5 chip. Strangely enough, you can't see the effect on the finished chips on the $1 chip.
There is one special chip: "Iceland" - I thought about differen options, including an all-in chip, NCV and a NIT chip. In the end, i wanted to use this chip as flexibly as possible and therefore decided to use “Iceland” as a placeholder for all kinds of things. I wanted this chip to be unique and so I used a quterpie here instead of the xDSA18 spots that I used for the progression of the four denoms. I wanted to capture the colors of the Puffin in this chip, so I used black and white as the basic colors and chose the two spots with DG Tiger and DG Peach in reference to the Puffin's beak. It's also the only chip where I used two colors as the shadow of the inlay text instead of just one like the others.
I also tried to incorporate the spot colors in the respective inlay, but decided against it because I was not satisfied with the result.
I also thought long about whether I should use B-Mold or CSQ again - I think the CSQ is great, but in the end I wanted to try something new here. I have a sample chip of the B-Mold at home that I really like, especially the feel of the texture. What bothers me here in connection with the Puffin design is the “B” in the mold ... then I had the idea, why not try something completely different: I know that scroll is not very popular and that there are not many custom sets posted at PCF on this mold. But I liked the idea that these "scrolls" reminiscent of air currents and that it visually fits the clumsy Puffin very well. I talked to some guys that own a scroll set and they all had very positive oppions about scroll. And that was enough for me to chose scroll and what should I say: it turned out that scroll mold fits extremely nice to the overall theme of this set and I really love the look!!! And before I forget: the texture of the scroll mold is somewhere between CSQ (a bit more smooth) and B-Mold (a bit rougher)...
By the way: Contrary to David's advice that it probably would look odd, I decided against a straight alignment of the Puffin to the axis, as it was important to me to capture the dynamics of the flying/landing Puffin. It turned out to be a great decision because I really like the final result on the chips.
25ct
Spot 2DSA18 / Tri-Moon shaped inlay / DG pink / Bright White / Retro Red /
$1
Spot 3DSA18 / COG shaped inlay / DG Peacock / DG Tiger / DG Arc Yellow
$5
4DSA18 / SCA shaped inlay / DG Arc Yellow / Retro Lavender / DG Green
$20
6DSA18 / CLOVER shaped inlay / Maroon / DG Peach / Mandarin Red
Iceland
1/4 PIE4Q14 / HUB shaped inlay / Black / Bright White / DG Tiger / DG Peach
The silent star of this set imo is the maroon chip - I never expected that color to look so nice! But it's a very close decision against the $5 that comes really close in my book.
In my mockup thread I received various advice not to use the same colors so often. I can absolutely understand that, but on the other hand it was very important to me to achieve a homogeneous progression in the chip colors and I wanted to build it up harmoniously overall without creating color combinations that were too wild.
Overall I am absolutely amazed by the look of this set and I am happy that the inlay design turned out that way. But I had to clean every chip with a toothbrush since a lot of production dust stuck in the thin mold lines and it was a lot of work to do until I could oil them. But it was worth the effort and after oling the colors really pop and my wife is extremley happy about these chips as well - so: happy wife, happy life it couldn't be better...
