Tourney Purchasing chip set - best ratio for Tourney structure? (1 Viewer)

Not sure this is the best forum for this type of question but it seemed correct.

While I am not exactly a newbie, I've played mostly cash rather than tournament but I am planning on buying a chip set. I am still deciding on what kind of set to buy but I am narrowing my options down and think I will be making my decision soon. My plan is to buy a 1000 chip set that will last me a long time. I figure I will use this set both for cash games in tourneys, and for that purpose I prefer the denominations to not include sent or dollar signs as I could even use the dollar amounts simply as some cent amounts.

Anywho, keeping with this idea, I plan on perhaps getting some 1 chips to go along with the fives for 1/2 or 1/3 cash game possibilities. If I have to sacrifice that to have a more balanced attorney said then I suppose I can do that (seeing as generally my friends and I mostly play 5/10 cent games or similar). So what I am generally asking is what would be a balanced ratio of chips and chip amounts for tourneys for 8+ people and on?

Looking for help on a breakdown but so far this was what I was thinking along the lines of so please let me know if perhaps I should adjust this (number on the left is denomination and number on the right is amount in the set):

1 chips - 250
5 chips - 300
25 chips - 200
100 chips- 150
500 chips - 100

I'm thinking this ratio might be enough to accomplish everything I could want out of tournament and cash but I'm not a hundred percent (perhaps why ratios might be a tad off, maybe that many 1 chips is a bit too many?) so I would definitely appreciate some feedback and/or advice on potentially good adjustments for the set, if needed.

Not a good idea to use tournament and cash chips as one set. It a security issue. Just my opinion.

The only thing I would consider is the 1 chip... It's either a penny or a dollar but you could use the 100 chip as a 1.00 or a 100

So 5 chip could be nickels or 5 dollars
25 chip could be quarters or 25 dollars
100 chip could be 1 dollar or 100 dollars
500 chip could be 5 dollar or 500 dollars

And I would replace the 1 chip with a 1000....

FWIW... Your going to end up with several sets anyway... Both cash and tourney. If you play mostly micro cash games then buy a really nice dedicated set... Win all your buddies nickels... And buy yourself a nice tourney set

Yeah, that translation you listed is pretty much what I go by. The only reason I'd consider keeping the 1 chips is that it stays consistent with the the
5 chips in a 1/2 cash game. That and the fact I really love how the 1 chip looks in the set I am most considering purchasing, lol.

But if I really needed to drop them in order to make for a more balanced tourney structure to potentially fit more people I suppose I could live with that. I really play much more cash than tourney, but obviously I want to be well prepared for both.

This would work with a few more 500's for tourney (you need 100 ). That way you can do a T-5000 for 10 players with a distribution of:
12 ea. 25

Ah, I see what you mean. I'm not really worried about such a thing, though. If I play a game with people outside of my friends' circle then I can consider using a different set. (I already have another set, it's just a cheaper one and I want some custom, more authentic chips) I make a habit of counting my chips at the end of the night, anyway.

This would work with a few more 500's for tourney (you need 100 ). That way you can do a T-5000 for 10 players with a distribution of:

7 ea. 500

I think that 100 nickels is plenty for a single-table cash game (some might argue that 200 would be better, ymmv). If you want the tourney side to support T5-based structures, you need 100 chips for a single-table tournament and 200 chips for a two-table tournament. Personally, if planning on 1000 total chips, I think the extra 200 chips can be used better elsewhere.

Add another rack of 100 and 500 chips if your game plays bigger.

Otherwise I'd just save the $$ and go with 800 chips.

All of my sets are combo cash/tourney. Been playing for years and have never had an issue. Of course its a group of friends. 200 $1's and 200 $5's have always been plenty when those get low i use $25's for buy ins.We play no limit but its a friendly game. $1,000 chips are very useful for bigger tourney's.
