I have a set of 500 original Paulson Pharoah's (200 @ $1 denomination, 200 @ $5 denomination, 50 @ $25 denomination, 50 @ $100 denomination) and I always meant to add to the set to make it easier to play a 10 person tourney. I'll never need more than enough for 10 people, but since I've been away from the game for about 5 years....holy. what. the....the chip prices are nuts! I mean, I love these, but now I'm wondering if I should just clean them and store them away! They are in mint condition, so now I'm even afraid to add to this set and actually USE them at this value.

I was initially thinking of just adding 100 white $1, 100 red $5 and 50 green $25 and calling it good. We play no-limit tourney style so there is usually one chipping up toward the end of the game once down to 2-3 people.

So, what have you folks done if in a similar situation?

Actually you should trade your 1s & 5s for higher denominations. 1s are not used for tourneys, and 5s would be rarely used too. 25s/100s/500s/1000s would be the norm.

You could put up a trade ad.

I host 10 person tourneys.
We start with 5000 in chips.
25s x12 = 300
100s x 12 = 1200
500s x 5 = 2500
1000s x 1 = 1000
= 5000 in chips.

Total chips needed:
25s x 120
100s x 120
500s x 50
1000 x 10
300 chips total
Preferable to have an extra barrel of 100s and a few extra 500s to color up.

Or you could do a T2K with 10/10/7/2 of T5/T25/T100/T500; that way for 2 tables of 10 each you can keep your two racks of $5s and get rid of the $1s and add-on the $25s/$100s/$500s. You could also look for a couple barrels of $1000s for rebuys.

Do not go by eBay prices for Paulson Pharaohs, most of them are beyond stratospheric.

No reason he can't stick with a T1-base tourney set, either: T1/T5/T25/T100 works just fine for T500 starting stacks and 1/2 opening blinds (10/8/10/2, 250BB).

350 chips is all that is really needed for a single-table event:
100 x $1
100 x $5 (20 for $1 color-ups)
100 x $25
50 x $100 (5 for $5 color-ups, plus 25 extras).

I guess it depends? Are you starting to host games again?
If not, I’d sell them and put the proceeds towards whatever hobby I’m doing currently.
If so, would you be almost as happy with a set of ceramics or China clays of good denominations to do a tourney?

I adore those chips and would buy a full set if I had money to burn. But they are so highly valued these days, id be hard pressed to hang onto them unless I had a perfect breakdown set and was using them frequently.

Edit: those are actually my favorite chips. I can’t help it: they are what I think of when I hear “poker chip”. Presumably because they were “the ultimate” during my formative years.

If I were you, I would sell them and buy something else you like more with the funds

Use them. Your home use shouldn't drop the condition too much if you ever decide to sell them in the future. Find the chips you need for an add on and be happy with what you have. You could also keep the Pharaohs you have and add on 100 blue NCV's to use as either 25 cent or 50 cent chips and use the Pharaohs for a cash set, and then buy another set for tourney.
Big fan of moar chips

USE THEM!

It makes me sad thinking of all those gorgeous chips sitting in drawers and cabinets maybe seeing the light of day twice a year at best, especially when there's tons of people out there willing to put them in play.

Actually you could add 100 x 25s and call it good. It’s not ideal playing tourneys with a cash set, but we did it for quite a while with a 600-chip set of exactly that breakdown (200/200/150/50). It would work, and would be like... ?$350-ish?

Or you could loan them out. I’d volunteer. :whistling:

WOW, so much great advice! Thank you all for taking the time to read my musings and respond.

I suppose this gets asked often, but I'll ask anyways. Is there a chance that they will EVER go back into production on these exact Pharoah chips?

Based on the feedback I'm leaning toward just adding to my set and keeping what I have in case I ever need to use the smaller denominations.

Khan - I like your starting chip setup:
Start with 5000 in chips.
25s x12 = 300
100s x 12 = 1200
500s x 5 = 2500
1000s x 1 = 1000
= 5000 in chips.

So I'm thinking that adding the following would get me there + a few more for coloring up etc:

100 - $25 chips (green)
100 - $100 chips (black)
75 - $500 chips (purple)
25 - $1000 chips (gold)

Chips are made to be used. And the few times you use them throughout the year will hardly make a difference to their condition. Why buy them and store them away? Just to sell them down the road or be buried with them? Where is the enjoyment in that. Use them and enjoy them.

Never say never, but nope.

Great point. Although now I can't imagine that I won't cringe just a little bit if one of my friends splashes the pot with these, lol.
