Was considering doing a relabel of the light/bright 25 tourney CPS chips into 25K value instead.

Just a few questions:

1. Do I need to remove the labels on the 25 chips first or just stick the new ones on?

2. I have the dark green 25K chips with labels already, can these be removed and reused or will I need to order fresh labels? If I can reuse them, what is the best way to remove them without causing damage to the label or chip?

3. What should I use to adhere them to the chips and how long should I wait after applying before using the chips in play?

4. Will I need to clean the chips and dry them before applying labels?

I switched a bunch of 500 chip labels with the lavender chip.

The labels pop off very easily with an Xacto knife and can be reused. For some of them, I just stuck them back on the other chip, but with most I hit quickly with a glue stick, and then replied the label. I have not had any of the labels pop off yet, but these chips are only used once a month.

I wiped down the chips before removing labels, just so there would be less dust to affect the adhesive.

You need to remove the existing labels, otherwise you're gonna have spinner/stacking issues. The recess isn't deep enough for two label thicknesses.

Do you know how thick the labels are?

I do not offhand (might have it buried in my design notes somewhere), but I do know from firsthand experience that two factory labels are thicker than the recess depth.

Yeah, they seem pretty sturdy. I was curious if you used a custom label from Gear or elsewhere how much of a difference there would be.

I suspect (but have no concrete evidence) that factory labels w/lamination are thinner than aftermarket laminated vinyl labels. I have access to both, but no accurate measuring device.

Also seems I remember that the laminate used for aftermarket labels comes in more than one thickness, but I don't recall if it is Gear or PGI that uses more than just one type. Makes logical sense that textured vs smooth laminate material might be different thicknesses.

Hey @Gear - got any input on your lamination thickness vs cc factory labels?

My "standard" laminated labels are about 8.5 mils (0.0085") and the CPS labels are 7 mils (0.007"), nominally. (I think Milanos are the same, so that probably holds true for most china clays.)

Remove the existing labels first. It's easy - just get an X-Acto or utility knife blade between the label and the face, and they pop right off.

See #1. I would say you can reuse them as long as you don't leave them lying around long enough to stick to other things or get dusty/dirty.

3. What should I use to adhere them to the chips and how long should I wait after applying before using the chips in play?

Nothing - the existing adhesive will likely be enough, as long as the chips you are applying them to are clean before hand. I'd start using them right away.

4. Will I need to clean the chips and dry them before applying labels?

See #3. Usually a good idea although it doesn't have to be massive overkill. Just get the dust and big stuff off.

...and then I read the rest of the thread, ie. SSanel's response :)

Yes, good point. What I would do for simplicity, though, is remove the labels from the chips you don't want, and get them all prepped before you start removing the labels you want to keep. Then you can pop them off the original chips and put them on the new chips directly.

BTW forgot to mention that I also have 2-mil vinyl, which could be laminated as well, if you needed something laminated but still around 7 mils.

Not to hijack the thread, but would there be any disadvantage of doing this as compared to your normal/conventional vinyl laminated labels?

It's more expensive. The 2-mil vinyl is "cast" where the regular stuff is "calendared". Cast vinyl has better dimensional stability (i.e. doesn't stretch or shrink as much) but it costs a lot more. I have to add a $0.02 surcharge for the 2-mil vinyl. It's also a little harder to work with just because it's thinner.

The other disadvantage (which doesn't matter, if you're laminating) is that I only have the 2-mil vinyl in glossy.

Makes sense. I would assume the difficulty in working with the thinner 2-mil vinyl (in terms of applying the labels) is only an issue if you don't laminate it. Once it's laminated, would handle just like the regular laminated labels?

I actually just prefer the bright green over the dark one, I think the color is more attractive and would rather have stacks of it on the table than the darker chips
Either way, I think it's a great idea! Can't wait to see Starting Stacks/ other Pr0n! I know I'm gonna wanna switch over to the brighter green chip for the 25K after seeing! Have you no mercy sir?!?!?!

So far the relabeling project is going well. Labels come off easy with an Xacto knife and they are actually sticky enough just attach to the replacement chip without my needing to put any glue on. Been shuffling them, no issues thus far

Awesome! Hope you post some pics!
Did you end up cleaning before relabeling?

I'm still relabeling, I started with 14 chips so I'd have enough to shuffle and try out (brought them to work) and still relabeling the others. I didn't do any cleaning, just took labels off chips and put them on the other chips, as they were plenty sticky.

I will get pics though, got a game this weekend where we'll be putting them into play, can't wait!
