Does anybody here have any experience with rotator cuff/SLAP tear injuries/surgery?

I’m likely going in for mine in the next month and I’m looking to hear any experiences. Good or bad but mostly good hopefully…

I have a full thickness tear and it has healed very well in the last few weeks. I have full range of motion with caution but I can tell its not very strong so I’m leaning toward surgery.

I had a very similar injury in my left shoulder about 15 years ago. Did a few months of PT at first and was feeling better. Went back to no restrictions at work again and injured again it the second time I lifted a ladder. Went to a specialist and had surgery. It felt like it took awhile to get back to normal but in less than a year, I was back to doing everything I could do before. Stay up on your meds after the surgery and it shouldn't be too painful. At least that was my experience. Best of luck to you on your healing up!

Thats what I need to hear. Thank you.

Had my first one done about 9 years ago (left) and was ok for a few years, but, it was never as strong as before, and, time and work took its toll. Was going to have it redone during covid, but, was postponed a couple of times until I just dropped the idea of doing it again, at least for now.

I was in pain for 2 years before I had it done, and after the initial pain of the surgery/post surgery recovery, I couldn't believe i had put it off as long as I had. I had heard so many horror stories about how bad the surgery was, how long recovery took that I just put it off until I couldn't stand it any longer. A couple of months after surgery I couldn't believe how much better I was feeling.

The only two bad part is I'm a side sleeper and I can't lay on that side for very long, painful.

Exellent! Thats what i need to hear. I’ve read too many horror stories.

I’m sure ill be fine. I heal well and want to just tough it out as I always have for almost 50 years but I’m getting older and wiser(I think…).

Had major surgery similar to yours over 25 years ago. Suffered with the injury unrepaired for awhile. Had the surgery. Slower recovery than anything I had anticipated. Didn’t really do the PT afterwards and was sort of unhappy with the recovery. Went to see my ortho guy and he said “how was PT?” I said “meh.” He said go home and take leaves, it was fall, and you’ll be fine. He was right.

Do everything they ask of you and know that it’ll be as good as the other one in the right amount of time.

100%.

PT at home and PT at “PT” is the only reason I’m where I’m at today.

Thank you.

I had a full tear in my right repaired in March of 2023. Sleeping was a bitch as I'm a side sleeper and you pretty much need to sleep sitting up. Luckily we have a Sleep Number with adjustable sides, so I was able to do that. Otherwise plan on a nice recliner. Recovery for me was a full year to get back to where I was. PT is mandatory for a good recovery.

I had my left shoulder done this past July with only a partial tear and recovery has been a LOT faster.

As for the wiping, the best pre-surgery purchase you can make is a bidet. Seriously, will never do without one now that I have it. Can't recommend this thing enough!!

Around midnight, when the nerve block wears off, have your pain pills near by because it feels like someone rammed an ice pick in your shoulder. I think i went with 1 or 2 percocets then stepped down and had 2 or 3 vicodins. After that I was able to tolerate the aching. Do the exercises they have you do at therapy as much as you can at home or at work. Check how many PT visits are covered under your insurance. You can dictate how often you go so don't let them schedule you 3 times a week if you are only covered for 16 visits. You'll go over and get a ridiculous bill to pay. The stretching and exercises are simple and they'll send you home with the diagrams of which ones to do. DO THEM! Best of luck with it.

Anybody had a knee repaired?

Following… Tire mine a year and a half ago and it’s definitely time to look at getting it repaired.

I’ve had two repairs in the same shoulder…stronger than ever, but have to do dead hangs every day or I have impingement.

Chicks dig scars.

Replaced. I'd do it again in a heartbeat -- repair was futile. Waited too long as it was...
I don’t think it’s worn out, just sprained severely from hyperflexed and then injuring it again after a rattlesnake encounter then again with a missed curb in the dark. It’s healing but slowly. Swelling is down but still some there and no strength in leg to climb stairs or anything like that. I figure 2-3 months of healing but probably a year to be back to normal. The upper thigh muscles have dropped and press the kneecap down. So it’s not worn out, just tendon and muscle damage.

I have MANY scars that never did me any good with the ladies but thats ok. My wife is a keeper for sure.

I can see 1 scar but below that scar it looks like Alien is going to burst through the skin 2 spots….

WTF is that?

No clue…a vein? Most of the incisions were in the back of my shoulder. They reused the hole in the front.

I've had surgery on labrum tears in each shoulder. Took a while to get the strength back, but stronger now. Actually competed in a powerlifting competition a five or so years after.

A few items that I tell people:
- Stay ahead of the pain. I know some don't like to take opioids. I took them an loved them. If you take them, get stool softener.
- I am a light sleeper and it was hell. Slept in a recliner for three months.
- Couldn't drive for 2 weeks after - I was not told this until post-op. Luckily, I was able to work from home.
- I was sent home with a DonJoy Iceman machine. it was great. If you get one, freeze water bottles or make large ice cube. It goes through regular ice very fast since the water circulates.
