I had to share something that I found out tonight. I am pretty excited about this discovery that I wish I knew about years ago. This might start off slow but stay with me, please.

So many of you know I have a daughter that is 20 years old and attends college out of town. Well, her roommate this year is an old friend. In fact it is her best friend. They have been best friends since the 4th grade. I have known her parents this whole time but we were never real close since we both worked a bunch ,so every time I would invite him to a concert or something he was always working or vice versa. Her father's name is Steve and through the years owned a car lot and worked in sales. Well he and his business partner came over tonight to check out my roof since he sells roofs. During his visit they both toured my upstairs man cave. He saw all of my chips and he said, "hey my Great Grandfather used to make chips." to which I thought was BS. Now it gets interesting.

So we started talking and he said he could remember hearing stories of his great grand father making chips. He stated that he made chips for illegal casinos. So that really sparked my interest. We started talking and he said his mom still had a bunch of chips which really got me going. He said that his family was in the chip making business. I called bullshit at first but he proceeded to tell me about his great grandfather. I knew Steve's last name but when he told me his great grandfathers last name my jaw dropped. His moms maiden name is JONES!!! he said his great or great great grandfather made chips for illegal casinos and his last name was JONES!!!

The funny thing is, his mother lives in a small community between where I live and where my daughter lives. In fact his mother purchased a bunch of furniture to decorate my daughter and her best friends apartment. My daughter used to spend weekends or the whole week during the summer at this lady's lake house!

So my next question was???? Does she have any chips to which he said that she did. He did say he would talk to her to let her know that if she was ever interested in selling to contact me. May never happen but he said one day we will sip some single malt scotch while looking through some chips! He said she has them but does not do anything with them.

I just thought it was funny that a man I have known for many years is a decedent of a chip maker. He said he will have his mom call me soon to talk about chips. Hopefully there is more to this and I will have more to share sometime in the future.

Such a fun coincident. Hopefully you'll be able to go check them out and take some pics, if nothing else. Look forward to the next chapter of this story

Cool! Whether or not this leads you to "owning" said chips, cool story and probably more history to learn in a future conversation. That's awesome.
Keep us in the loop for sure.

Actually why aren't you at his moms right now? What's wrong with you, I need more details. :D

Well I hope there is more to follow. I will try and follow up soon. I tend to be one that fully investigates prior to saying something but I was pretty stoked last night. I felt pretty confident that he was telling the truth and had no reason to "all my leg". He knows nothing about chip collecting and did not even know that the Jones name meant anything in the Chip World. I guess now I need to inquire more to get his great grandfathers full name. Is there a tie in to Christy and Jones out of Kansas or Jones Brothers out of New Orleans? Who knows? I intend to find out but to sure when we will be able to get together. Hopefully soon, I will not make a promise since I have never met the lady but I will make every attempt to make contact.

Geez, how tough... You can keep a poker face, and if she has racks and racks of chips you "take them off her hands" for a song - or you get really excited and bring a little joy to a family when they learn granddad made a real mark on the world.

On second though I know you David. There is no way you wouldn't share the excitement with the family.

Here's to dreams of boxes and boxes of the "16 clubs" mold, and a lady that really doesn't want them anymore. (y)

You are going to find out you are part of a super elaborate hidden camera TV show, & your daughter set you up .......
LOL. i know, I texted her late last night to ask her if she knew about her roommates Grandmother and she said she had no idea. Well you know I have to at least pursue it a bit for me and all of the other chip geeks. Could you imagine if I did not look into it and it was true. I am willing to take the chance that it is nothing rather than miss out on some possible chip history! And if I end up with "egg in my face" well I guess I could always make egg salad!

Great story.

Christy & Jones was owned Bill Christy and Bud Jones. The original company was names Christy & Garrison, but when Garrison left (retired?), they renamed it to Christy & Jones, which was around 1953. Bud Jones full name was Barnard B. Jones. Not sure about Jones Brothers, I'll have to look through my notes.

I am watching with interest ... Hopefully you can at least convince him to get you a few "samples .. :)
Maybe the relative was BoJo Jones , of 1970's ABC movie-of-the-week fame:

I spelled Bud Jones' name wrong, it should be Bernard B. Jones. More notes on Bud Jones. Per a Christy & Jones article, Bud Jones was born in 1915 and died in 2001. He worked as a dice mechanic for Christy Manufacturing in 1940's. According to a 1952 state record for Christy & Jones, Bud Jones listed an address on Antoich Road, Merriam, KS. Bud Jones left Christy & Jones in 1965 and started the Nevada Dice Company in 1965 with the Nevada mold. I believe the Nevada Dice Company was either a DBA or predecessor to the Bud Jones Co.

Not much on Jones Brothers, i have operating dates listed between the early 1930s and 1980s.

Not sure which Jones but I would venture to guess it is going to be Jones Brothers. I hope to be talking to the Grandson sometime this week to get a name. I do know I will be talking to his mother sometime. In the meantime I spoke to my daughter who said this lady is a blast. Very fun and is "well to do". Cannot wait to speak with her.

Great story, watching with interest. It's great to have the resources here, like @gmunny , also Jim B from CPC/ ASM knows everything about the business, but I haven't seen him on this site in a while.

I just got off of the phone with "Mrs. Jones", man the stories she has. I have to put my notes together before I share some of what she told me. She also sent me a few of pictures. One of some single chips for the illegal clubs and also a picture of one of the Jones' business cards.

I will tell you that The company her family had was the Jones Bros company. Stories to follow when I get back home from being on the road.

So here is, lets say a first installment of stories. Going forward I am going to refer to my friend as Ms. Gail

So Ms. Gail surprised me with a phone call this afternoon while I was away on business. I was doing some work when the phone rang and I almost did not answer the phone since I did not recognize the number. For some reason I answered and I heard a very nice lady's voice telling me who she was. Needless to say I was happy to hear form her and started listening to her story. I had not started to take notes right away but decided to about halfway through our conversation. I hurriedly scribbled notes that I needed to get my secret decoder ring out to decipher. I was fortunate that when I left to drive back to my home town I received a bunch of text messages from Ms. Gail which contained pictures and explanations of who was who in her family.

At this time I may not put everything in one post but give you a bit of background of her and her family. Then go into stories about her family

So Ms. Gail was born on a Navy base in 1944. Her father helped run a still with his brother and nephew in Kansas City in 1942 until he joined the Navy and was an Aviation Ordinance Instructor. at some point of time he was a craps dealer and in 1946 he lost four of his fingers. She said there were stories of how it happened but no one really knew. After that he ended up working for the Dean Rubber Company which sold Peacock Rubbers. This was quite an industry because in these times that was basically the only birth control. She told me he had a good job which required a college education. Kenneth was hired there even though he did not have a college education. Ms. Gail said she still has letters that were from Mr. Dean discussing Politics in Mexico and Texas

She said she grew up there and moved to Texas and attended high school in San Antonio. Ms. Gail also spokee of letter from her father to her mother telling her how they were forced to move from one town to another.. which depended on the attitude of gaming and drinking in the then political climate. Please note he was in Texas while Ms. Gail was younger and still in Oklahoma with her mom. Being in Texas and also being Southern, Baptist drinking and gaming were frowned upon

So let's take a look at the family tree. Ms. Gail's Father was Kenneth Jones. It was Kenneth Jones' father and uncles that were the "Jones Brothers" There were three Bothers, Leslie Clover Jones, George Simeon Jones (Ms. Gail's Grandfather) and Haskell Ferris Jones.

George Simeon Moses Jones - was a still operator, ran fast cars and was in the bar business. One the still he operated was in Kansas City where Mr. Gail's Dad Kenneth Worked.

Leslie Clover Jones - Had one son who is still a Lawyer in Las Vegas for five different casinos. Leslie was one of the brothers that was in the chip business and was also a Sr. Pit Boss at none other than the Flamingo Hotel. He was very close to Bugsy. At the time a Senior Pit Boss' job was to collect the money that was to be sent to "New York" (the Genovese Family)

Haskell Ferris Jones - Said to be a "Made" man (Genovese Family) he appeared to be the leader of the Brothers and was the one who made the Jones Brothers Casino Chips. He was friends with Carlos Marcello and Billie Sol Estes. Ms. Gail said she actually had the opportunity to speak with Billie and went into some details about how LBJ was to have been in trouble with Billie due to receiving grants on Land that was not owned by them. Also some mention of the Assassination of JFK toed back to Carlos Marcello. In one of the bars that was owned by the family she said that Jim Pendergast met with Truman and told him that he would be the next President.

Picture in next post!
