Solids vs Edge Spots (1 Viewer)

I have some regrets post sale on an RHC mixed set I sold recently. In an effort to repair the hole this left I am looking to slowly build my first THC set. It won’t be a fast process so I need to up my patience on this one.

My question for the forum is about solids vs edge spot sets. I have been kicking around the idea of a flamingo THC set but often notice solids have variation in colour when you look at them stacked vs their counterparts with edge spots.

Is this just the norm? Is it improved with oiling or is that just a temporary fix?

Solid sets are cool as shit, especially with a new/unique label.

If used solids, there is more likely to be color variation than NM-Mint, simply because sometimes these are pieced together racks.

A mixed set with edge spots (aka very specific chips) is more likely to have little color variation, if any at all, assuming chips are largely in the same condition.

@Sprouty loaned me as sample set as I was looking at designing my first CPC sets.. which I still have to return... ha. But IMO There's something very special about a well executed solids set.. would love to see more!

The hardest choice for me at this point would be hotstamp vs. inlay. But this decision on spots vs solid is just as hard. Another option that’s tough to decide on is do you do spot progression or single spot type. Decisions, decisions. All of these are soul searchers when talking thousands to execute.

I have to agree. I don’t know why I keep coming back to building a solid set but there is an understated elegance to them. That being said I am considering a full label replacement and doing something custom with no intent to sell.

After selling my last set I realized that building and selling isn’t for me. Just building….

Yeah and that's an opinion that's subject to change. For years I had no question that I wanted different, complex spot patterns on each chip. But these days, I could be very happy with 312s across the board.

Speaking of CPC. Any concerns with CPC closing shop if you aren’t ordering a full set in one shot? I was hoping to collect a rack every few months on the forum but the thought of mint/brand new chips is tempting. Just worried I get halfway through and they close shop

You would get a rack every many months in that case. There's a long wait for each order while waiting for the same mold to run again (unless you pick the A(aaargh)-mold). Also, there's a minimum of 300 chips per order. Also, there might be slight variations in clay colors from batch to batch.

I have much to learn about CPC clearly. The only purchase I’ve made was the rounders sample set…..

Get all at once if that’s your worry. Later on if they are still around do a second set, or some secondaries. @krafticus has done this.
Add on is another option.

yeah I wound up going with 312s across the board for my cash set and saved the complex spot patterns for the smaller tournament set. Just something kind of classic about the 312 spots.

Don't leave out that there are color combinations to think about. Classic, Red, Green, Black VS California colors. Different colors can flash as much as edge spots.

It all depends on what you play and want to get. It's not really that hard of a choice if you're into mint chips. The current CPC is pretty good. The DG colors are very close to Paulson. If that matters at all... And even the price will be lower. Look at the pictures. I got the rest of my Paulson set today, but I was looking for some really worn ones to match the rest of the chips... But a mint set in the same quantity would probably ruin me. And they come on the market a lot rarer than you think. The price of the rare colors can be so high that you could get a whole set from CPC for the price of a new Paulson rack.

I prefer edge spots, because is easier for count the chips of the villains, more practical. They're are more beautiful, but it depends of personal taste. For example, París $1 >>>> solid Flamingo $1

There's a certain amount of colour variation when you're talking about vintage THC solids such as Starburst chips and generic Paulson roulettes from the 80s-90s.

Just build them one set at a time, it’s definitely helpful for both keeping the spending at a moderate rate and reducing any buyers remorse
