Hey guys, I decided that I'm going to start a small 600 chip cash set and I need help with what $5 chip would work well with it. Preferably in good condition+ but if there isn't much out there I will probably have to deal with whatever I can get. I'm looking for something with a dark inlay because the current set includes/will include:

Some possible fives

How much do these Grand Vic secondaries run?

Breakdown will be
200 x $.25
200 x $1
200 x $5 or 180 + 25 x $25 so feel free to suggest $25s as well

Great start. Great breakdown. Also think about substituting 1 barrel of $5's with 1 barrel of $25's to increase your bank if needed (200/200/180/20).

The thread below should help you out quite a bit... It covers this exact topic... What to pair with Motor City quarters...

The theme was definitely sticking with darker inlays... Grand Vics, Chips/Tukwila, Crystal Park, etc... all work great.

Good luck.

I appreciate the reply. I actually have been through that thread a few times. The only set I thought looked good with Motor City quarters (and dark enough) were the Crystal Park. If I were to go that route I would definitely want Crystal Park $1 and $5s because I don't want yellow $5s with white $1s. That setup did look fantastic though. The Grand Vics were the next best but not exactly what I'm looking for. I did not like the Tuk's at all.

As for the adding a barrel of $25s, that isn't a bad idea at all. If you have any that come to mind feel free to post. I would typically use my larger set for games I thought might break $1200 but adding a another $400 never hurts

Not to stir the pot, but I'd suggest this breakdown for a 600 chip set:

100 x .25c
200 x $1
300 x $5 (or 280 x $5 and 20 x $25)

Since you're limiting the size to 600 (totally reasonable), I'd make sure the set was flexible enough to grow as your game grows, stakes-wise. Fracs are only needed for blinds and 100 of them is more than plenty for a single table. Those extra 100 chips are far more useful as your workhorse mid-denomination chip, the $5.

Plus, if you expand to 800, you can have what I think is the ideal breakdown for most all stakes you're likely to play:

100 x .25c
200 x $1
400 x $5
80 x $25
20 x $100

Regardless what breakdown you decide upon, make sure you get at least 5 extra of every chip in case of Murphy.

You aren't stirring the pot at all. I appreciate the thoughts and I agree that typically 100 quarters is plenty and that other breakdowns are more versatile(also "better"). I only decided to build this set because I love the Motor City quarters so much. I want 200 just because I love the chip and will get more than 100 in play at a time in my games (if I so choose). I went with 600 200/200/200(maybe 180/20) because it's an easy breakdown, fits in a 600 chip birdcage, and will be enough bank for my low stakes games. If I'm playing anything higher I will use my Aztar set (100x$.25/200/400/200/100) so I'm not worried about this set expanding for the time being (and if it does expand I still don't mind having 200 quarters).

PNY $5s are an option, that denom has the darker inlay, an oversized inlay like the motor city 25¢, same mold, continues the increasing spot progression.

^^^ good point. I have a few racks of those I could let go for a deal. Other than the fact that some of them have flea bites from a poor packing job when shipped to me, they are otherwise mint.

Hmm. I don't love them. They are a little darker red than I usually like (but that might be a good thing with these quarters), but they definitely check all the boxes so they are definitely in the running.

I don't want to bother you because it's too early to make a decision, but they are definitely in the running. If it's not too much of a bother can I PM you about them?

I don't like the Grand Vics with the others ..... then again I am not a fan of those chips (Grand Vic) at all ....and on top of that, I am not a fan of red chips.

Some other possibilities...

Bremerton Lanes
Mesquite Star
Diamondback's
Bellagio ;)

I guess I should update this! I ended up getting two racks of PNY 5s. I have not gotten a full two racks of 1s yet otherwise I would have posted pictures.
