I have to organize a 30 player tournament with T5000 starting stacks and unlimited re buys in the beginning of tournament with an optional add on at the end of re buy period.
Tournament to end within 3 hours. Would like to color up T25 chips early for ease/speed as many beginners. Starting stacks: T25/8, T100/13, T500/7. Would greatly appreciate advice on blind structure, level times and re buys. This is for charity so want to raise as much $ as possible but needs to end at around 3 hours.
Many Thanks!

BG will have good structure advice. However, I would not have a super aggressive structure in the beginning... If your blinds climb too high right off, people might not consider a rebuy... 5k starting stacks are not very large to begin with, and as you progress to 200/400, a 5k rebuy is essentially 12bb (super short stacked). I would never consider rebuying in a tourney where my re-entry only gets me 12bb (and I'm already crippled). If your thoughts are to use rebuys to help generate charity revenue, ensure your structure makes rebuys attractive.

For the earlier levels, I would suggest something like this (but follow BG's advice):

25/50
25/75
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
Break - Color Up 25's, end re-entries
200/400
300/600
400/800
500/1000

Okay, decided to do away with T25s entirely (for ease) and lengthen the first 2 levels (50 minutes each) so that players are not rushed and so that re-buys make sense and add-ons also make sense. $200 for initial buy-In (T5,000), re-buys (T5,000 chips each) and $200 for add-ons (T10,000 chips). This is a poker tournament within a Blue Marlin tournament in the Bahamas so not necessarily experienced poker players. Let me know what you think. Really appreciate the help!

Payout Structure: 1st: 55%, 2nd: 25%. 3rd: 20% of available prize pool. 30 minimum (might get much higher than that - 45-60)

55 minute rounds (re buy period):
L1 100 100
L2 100 200
End of Re Buy Period. T10,000 Add On available to everyone

10 minute break

15 Minute Rounds:
L3 200 400
L4 300 600
L5 500 1000
L6 1000 2000

10 minutes each remaining round (if any):
L7 1500 3000
L8 5000 10,000
L9 10,000 10,000
L10 10,000 20,000
L11 20,000 30,000
L12 30,000 40,000

Given your conditions (3hr max, lots of re-buys), I'd strongly advise you to go with all T100/T500 chips. T5000 starting stacks could be 10xT100 and 8xT500.

Allow rebuys at 5000 chips or less, so they can rebuy right away or if they completely bust, double rebuy. That way as the rebuy period comes to a close, shorter stacks are encouraged to shove and either double up or bust on the final hand, so they can double rebuy and do the addon for 20k total.

Also: man you run in a high end crowd.

Not a fan of the above structure, which will likely run about 3.5 hours with breaks. Also not fond of heavily-weighted payouts to only top 10% of the field, especially when you are turning it into a no-skill shovefest with 233% blind increases towards the end. I see what you are trying to accomplish, and will post a smoother structure to accommodate your requirements (including 3 hr max).

@smux3 please give serious consideration to any structure BG recommends. He is without a doubt, the structure guru. Your event won't be steered wrong.

It's like asking for advice about basketball, and when Michael Jordon tells ya what to do, ya listen. :).

Given your conditions of a) charity with maximum player $$ expenditures, and b) 3-hour time limitation, I recommend the following format and structure. Some quick notes:
  • Allowing re-buys when player stacks are at or below T7000 encourages initial double buy-ins and double re-buys.
  • Structuring the re-buy stacks 40% larger than the initial buy-in stack sizes encourages re-buys.
  • Structuring the add-on stacks 200% larger than the initial buy-in stack sizes encourages add-ons.
  • Having a uniform cost for buy-ins, re-buys, and add-ons minimizes staff work/errors and is easily understood by players.
  • Having fewer chip denominations (three maximum) in play makes for faster play and minimal player confusion, and less staff work/errors during chip sales and color-ups.
This format works well with any preset donation amount, but keep in mind that the lower the cost to buy-in/re-buy/add-on, the more re-buy/add-on purchases will be generated. The blind increases range mostly from 50% to 67%, averaging 55% over the duration of the event, so plenty of opportunity to play and maneuver without encountering blinds shock.

I have used this format successfully in multi-table charity events with donation amounts ranging from $20 to $100. Only you can determine if a $200 donation level will be successful for your specific crowd.

30-player T5000 re-buy/add-on charity tournament structure

$200 buy-in = T5000 starting chips (10 x T100 and 8 x T500)
$200 re-buy = T7000 re-buy chips (7 x T1000) until break
$200 add-on = T10000 add-on chips (2 x T5000) at break

Conditions:
Unlimited re-buys during first hour (first three blind levels)
Players may choose to re-buy immediately, prior to start ($400 = T12000 starting chips)
Players may re-buy between hands whenever stack is less than or equal to T7000 chips
Busted players may single re-buy ($200 for T7000) or double re-buy ($400 = T14000)

Structure:

L1-L3 = 20 minutes
L4-L8 = 15 minutes
L9-L16 = 10 minutes

L14 20000 40000
L15 30000 60000
L16 50000 100000

** estimated tournament end at L11/L12 (approximately 3 hours with two breaks), depending on number of re-buys/add-ons. Note that a player who busts on the last hand of L3 can still double re-buy and add-on, creating a stack for L4 that is equal to 60BB.

Chip Set:

300 x T100
240 x T500
420 x T1000 (up to 60 re-buys)
90 x T5000 (up to 30 add-ons, plus 30x to color-up T100 and T500 chips)
--------------
1050 chips

Alternately, you can use 2xT1000 and 1xT5000 for half of the 60x T7000 re-buys, and get by with the following:

300 x T100
240 x T500
270 x T1000
120 x T5000
--------------
930 chips

Or use 2xT1000 and 1xT5000 for all of the 60x T7000 re-buys, requiring only these chips:

300 x T100
240 x T500
120 x T1000
150 x T5000
--------------
810 chips

Recommended payouts (of available prize pool):
<15 players - pays 1 (100%)
15-21 players - pays 2 (65% / 35%)
22-28 players - pays 3 (55% / 30% / 15%)
29-35 players - pays 4 (50% / 30% / 15% / 5%)
36+ players - pays 5 (50% / 30% / 10% / 5% / 5%)

Glad to hear it went well. Got any details on your final numbers (buy-ins, re-buys, add-ons)? Which chips were used?

32 players total and all in all, a very tight, conservative crowd: 15 rebuys (most by 4 guys) and 11 add-ons.

Chips used: T100s, T500s (orange) and T10,000 (blue)
