I'm playing in a 3-4 table STUD tourney this weekend. Its one of our League games. I have played STUD only a handful of times. The last STUD tourney I played in was a couple of years ago.

Any tips, suggestions, ect......

Thanks in advance.

Short handed, small stack Stud is quite different from "normal" stud. Players should be raising almost any hand with the biggest door card as the event winds down. Stealing the antes and the bring-in becomes critical late in the event.

So, a conventional strategy is best on full(er) tables when the stacks are deep. But a maniac style works best later on.

You didn't mention pot limit vs fixed limit - I assumed fixed limit. (and it is stud not stud/8)

I also assumed you have an idea about basic starting hands and how to play the cheap streets vs the expensive ones, etc.

Have fun! -=- DrStrange

Wired pairs are more valuable than split pairs, because of the hidden value when you make trips. Rolled up is the best, three to a straight flush is also a real good opener. Raise preflop with the high card showing if you're in position on other semi high cards. Other than that, pay attention and remember other peoples door cards when they fold, especially if they are your flush outs or two pair or trip outs. Tight is right, and punish the weak people. Don't be the weak person who gets punished.

Check these videos out. If you're playing stud high only, then disregard the high vs. low cases.

Thank you guys.

I'll watch the videos tomorrow.

I'm not a Stud expert but my tips are:

drawing hands are better played in multi way pots
dont play a 3-card flush when more than 2 of your flush cards are out
dont slow play low trips starting hand (333)

if you wish a starting hand chart I can send you one

Try to remember discards; outs for you and outs for your opponents.

Pay attention to your opponents boards and try to determine which cards help them.

Don't be married to middle pairs - 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, T-T - regardless of position at any time even if the other two cards may be live.

Usually, a two pair A-A/X-X hand is very strong, so try to bloat the pot if your opponents boards look non-threatening. This is true throughout the entire tournament.

Non-ace two pair hands like Q-Q/X-X can be tricky, especially with overcards to your top card on others boards or their 3 or 4 card flushes or 3 or 4 card straights. It's tough to win a 3-way or 4-way pot; better to be heads-up with hands like this. Leading out/calling bets is difficult. Winning these pots is crucial, since there usually is betting and calling on later streets.

If someone is betting with an exposed A or K, it frequently means they have this pair. If they bet and you call and they bet the next street, they are not afraid of your holding (most of the time) and you should assume you're up against a pair.

Play solidly with your opening range in the beginning, and open it up in the middle and late stages.

Lots of good stuff here, but I'll note one important factor that is easy to miss: Pay attention to the size of the antes relative to the bets.

If the ante is around 1/8 or 1/10 the size of the small bet, tend to play tighter openers than if it is larger. With a larger ante, open up your hand selection a little, and tend to try to steal the antes more often (if that's feasible at your table).

It's going OK so far. I have more than my starting stack at the first break. Playing TAG.

I would be interested in the chart as well, stud hi is probably my weakest game in h.o.r.s.e and 8-game.

21 players. I finished on the bubble. I played well. When I did make a mistake it was minimal. The advice in this thread definitely helped

Thanks! I will play my first live 8-game tournament this fall, and want to improve in a couple of the games beforehand.
