I'd like to build up one of my tourney sets and try a 30 player, 3 table tourney with 12/12/5/6 stacks instead of 8/8/4/7. I'd also like to have an option for 100% rebuys.

First, would the chip set breakdown look like this from the HomePokerTourney calculator? (375/375/150/225/125)

I'm assuming that
-->I'll order in multiples of 25 chips per denomination
-->The extra T1000s color up the T25/T100
-->The extra T5000s color up the T500/T1000 and are for the 100% rebuys

Second, what would appropriate blind structures be for 100% rebuys or a freezeout with no rebuys? I prefer finishing around 5 hours if possible.

For 30 players and T20,000 per player, there will be T600,000 in play at the end of the tournament. T600K / 20BB ending means the final blinds will likely be 15K/30K.

30 players is a lot, so to get done quickly enough is a bit challenging and will require shorter levels or larger gaps (between the two, I'd guess the first of is a better option).

15 minute levels:
25/50
50/100
75/150
100/200
150/300
Color Up T25s
200/400
300/600
400/800 (Last Level for Rebuys)
600/1200
800/1600
Color Up T100s
1000/2000
1500/3000
Color Up T500s
2000/4000
3000/6000
4000/8000
6000/12000
8000/16000 (EOT Freezeout)
Color Up T1000s
10000/20000
15000/30000 (EOT)
20000/40000
30000/60000

This puts the tournament at 4:45 plus color up breaks. Since this would probably put it over 5 hours, you could skip over the T100 color up and wait until the T500 color up to get rid of both at the same time, and ignore the T1000 color up since the tournament would end shortly afterward anyway.

There is no way are you going to have 100% re-buys with T25-base 10k stacks (200bb with 25/50 blinds). Even with 100b stacks (50/100 blinds), re-buys will not exceed 50% of the field size. Unless the re-buy cost is ridiculously low, most similar events see a re-buy rate between 20%-33% (10 re-buys max for 30 players), and set planning for 50% of the field size is more than sufficient.

For 30 players with 12/12/5/6=10k stacks, 15 x T10k re-buys (5x T1000 and 1x T5000), and using T5000s for T25/T100/T500 color-ups, you will need:

360 x T25
360 x T100
150 x T500
255 x T1000 (75x for re-buys)
40 x T5000 (25x color-ups, 15x re-buys)
------------
1,172 total chips, or if rounding up:
1,225 total chips = 375/375/150/275/50
(add 30x more T5000 if insistent on 100% re-buys). You don't need to add more T1000s as color-up chips; you will need the extra T5000s in play.

Note that you can get by with just 350 chips of both T25 and T100 if you seat 27 players with 12/12/5/6 stacks plus 3 players with 8/8/4/7 (place one smaller stack on each table).

I'd recommend these 1,200 chips to best accomplish your goals: 350/350/150/275/75

To finish a 30-player 10k event in 5 hours, you can either go with ~40% average increases using 15-minute blind levels, or use ~60% average increases using 20-minute blind levels. You can also go with longer 30-minute blind levels paired with 100% increases. Below are examples of each; where eot = estimated freeze-out max length (re-buy events may require up to one additional level to complete).

In any "normal" tournament I would agree. But host might want to incentivize more rebuys by either giving free ones for first bust out and allowing top up bonuses for those who don't. Or maybe wants to run a charity tournament where paid top up available as well to maximize fundraising. I'm all for efficiency when you can, but also expansion of play options when desired.

Thank you for the three blind level examples, especially the 20 minute & 30 minute levels with steeper increases (which would be very useful for a field of newer or less experienced players).

Also, the suggestion of 350 chips each for T25 and T100 is very appreciated from a purchasing standpoint--I was having difficulty seeing where I could pare back in chip counts and still meet my goals for this type of set :tup:

Or maybe wants to run a charity tournament where paid top up available as well to maximize fundraising. I'm all for efficiency when you can, but also expansion of play options when desired.

One idea that I considered with 100% rebuys was the "prebuy" idea: for one price, include a special chip or plaque that could be activated during the first two levels as a rebuy or after the first color up break as an add-on (if not used as a rebuy).

What would you consider an ideal amount as an add-on for players that didn't have to rebuy?

Yep, if everybody pays the same, then everybody gets a second stack.

When you get it depends on if you lose your first one.

Would the second stack count as a rebuy for bustouts within the first 100% increase (25-50 to 50-100)?

(For players not in need of rebuying, would the first colorup break be a good time for the second stack add-on?)

It wouldn't be a second entry, since you'd have to treat the initial buy-in as two entries (effectively making it a 60 player tournament for half the initial buy-in).

Activating the rebuy/add-on chip during the first break is a good time since you're already removing other chips from the table anyway and making it a sort-of light guarantee for more playing time for everybody.

If you are doing pre-buys (issuing two stacks per player, both pre-paid), then the second stack issued when a player busts is a 're-load', not a 're-buy' (since the player isn't actually buying anything at that point). Automatically convert any unused re-loads into add-ons at first color-up.

I'd just like to say that these posts are very helpful, especially for someone like myself who has trouble figuring out some of this stuff. Thank you.

I wholeheartedly agree with this sentiment: the information here at PCF has improved my chip purchases and the operation of the games that I play
