I have a few questions about the differences between RHC and THC chips:

1: I have seen people mention that THC chips are more durable than RHC ones. Is this a noticeable and significant difference? In other words, are RHC chips not durable?

2: Are mixed sets with both THC and RHC chips common, or do the aesthetic designs clash too much? For example, THC $1s with RHC $5s for a cash game set. Do your players care, or is it too subtle for most to notice, or does it just work?

3: Do overlabeled THC chips look better than overlabeled RHC ones? It seems to be that overlabelling works better on THC chips due to the smaller inlay, but I’m curious how others feel.

I realize these questions are pretty subjective. I’m just hoping for some more experienced chippers to weigh in with their personal thoughts. As a new member trying to decide what chips to buy for a cash game set, that would be helpful.

Thanks :)

1. RHC Designed to wear out. That wasn’t a consideration with THC.
2. Not common but not unknown. Some casinos did this. It’s not terribly popular here, mixing molds in general is kinda frowned on.
3. So many variables. You like what you like.

1. Most durable chips are CPCs, not Paulsons. That said, THC Paulsons are supposedley sturdier, which will mostly go undetected in home game use.
Older, lead-filled THCs are considered a treasure around here sound-wise, and weight-wise (without using slugged metal discs like pathetic plastic chips do) and command crazy prices.
2. Mixing any different type / kind of chips is an anathema for the "clergy" around here (to which I may belong by now), but most of your chip-ignorant players won't notice.
3. Probably true, but again it depends on the eyes who judge them.

Bonus: Buy CPCs, either customs or off-the-shelf, including the Key Wests. :)

1. Neither are wearing out for Home game use. Durability really isn't a concern.

2. To each their own, but most go one way or the other.

3. Have only ever inlay replaced myself. More landscape to use on RHC, but personally really like textured labels on THC.

Do think THC has a better look, feel than RHC. But end of the day both are fantastic options.

(1) the hat and cane being closer to the edge with no protection from an outer ring on RHC’s makes them more susceptible to flea bites than THC’s (or so the common wisdom goes). Probably not a huge concern in a home setting as others have said.

(2) personal preference. Some casinos have and continue to do it (Paris in Vegas currently has mix of THC/RHC $1’s and THC for the rest of their lineup)

(3) I’m of the opinion that THC’s look better murdered/relabeled than RHC’s for the reasons you describe.

I like RHC’s, and there are some killer RHC sets (IOC, HSI, etc.). RHC sets can provide a reasonable point of entry for new people to get their hands on Paulsons, and I don’t think they are given enough credit in that regard.

Also note that the material in Pausons is the same whether THC or RHC, the only difference is the mold used in pressing them.
On RHCs, the hat is extremely close to the edge creating a thin sliver of clay that often breaks off with minimal play. It's just part of the wear on an RHC chip, and as it wears further, all of the tops of the hats will wear off. It's more unsightly, but it doesnt affect the longevity of the chip.

I’m going to chime in and offer the opinion that 99% of flea bites you see on RHC chips is from a casino dealer banging the chips against the chip toke box. I haven’t found chip pieces from my Jack Tournament RHC chips after some pretty spirited play.

Also THC chips encompass two different molds. LCV and SCV. LCVs are usually much heavier than their SCV brothers.
