This was the first set of vintage casino chips I was able to find at an affordable price.

1,995 chips from all sorts of sources, but mostly from JWS Sports Collectables

JWS Sports is the original source for Outpost chips. As I understand the story, they purchased a storage unit filled with the remains of the bancrupcy sale from both Outpost locations. This was one of the first sets of vintage chips sold - and not nearly as good looking as some of the other sets sold at the same time.

This was a California card room. The games were limit games, some with an ante. One thing I didn't buy was a rack of ten cent chips. They wanted something like $700 for the rack - crazy talk to me at the time.

The Outpost had two locations, San Ramon and Pacheco. They did not have primary & secondary chip sets. When you see what looks like primary and secondary chips they really are chips from sister locations.

Chips valued at more than $20 were not common. Not that I don't wish for more of the $25 and $100, but I didn't pull the trigger at the time.

Outposts {almost} in action. This was my "morning after, biggest winner" picture from the Holiday, 2015 $0.25/$0.50 game.

Hey I have played with those chips before!!!

Hey I think I see my $20 bill in that last picture  :ROFLMAO:

My wife asked me how much this chip set was worth as I was getting set up to take these pictures. And did I remember how much I paid for them? I offered an off the top of my head guess for what was paid, but she thought I might be wrong. So I dug up the old records . . . Oh boy, was I mistaken!

JWS sports offered an eBay sale of 1,000 Outpost chips for $469, shipped. 100 $20s, 300 $5s and 600 $1s. This was my first big purchase, a thousand chip set for $0.47 per chip. Soon there after, I added a rack of $20s for $75

Some chips came and went, but I ended up with an additional 95 $5 chips plus 200 $5 chips from the Pacheco location - my "Christmas game" five dollar chip. One of my favorite chips.

Next came 400 quarters at $470 and a rack of $2 chips at $90.

Finally the 60 $25 chips at $100 and 40 $100 chips for $47

Total of 1,995 chips for $1,391 I had 'remembered' well over $2,000.

By today's standards those are "crazy talk numbers" on the low side. But I can't really say what the market price is now. I don't know that a rack of anything from the Outpost has sold lately except for some large inlay $100s from that curious eBay seller who had bags and boxes of outpost $100 chips. Only $100 chips! (and that is likely an interesting story, because the original source had almost NO $100 chips - so it might be possible someone grabbed up all the $100 chips right after the place closed?)

There are some racks offered at inflated(?) prices by the original source on eBay right now but they aren't ever being sold at those prices over eBay. I wouldn't us that as my starting point even though it would be interesting if the set really was worth $6,000 - $10,000.

I can't make anything more than a wild guess about value. I told my wife, "something like $3,000", when she asked. But no one really knows. The four racks of quarters alone might bring huge prices.

And before anyone asks - - - NO, not selling!

DrStrange

You made me read the whole damn post and then you say that you're not selling?  Dibs on the quarters.

Awesome set man. Those need to stay together fo sho.

Very cool history on your chip purchase. Back then those were probably expensive chip prices, now anything under .50/chip is a steal. Face value for 1's seems like a good deal these days lol.

That one seller on eBay has a ton of giant inlay 5's and some 100's. No 1's left though.

As I recall, PNY, Vineyard and Olivia's were from roughly the same time frame as the Outpost chips. Outpost were the "poor man's" vintage casino chip. Anything less than a buck a chip was a huge bargain. Just think what a 2,000 chip set from Olivia's etc. would be worth today!

I have been looking forward to this post ever since you mentioned you were going to take pictures of the whole set. Very cool to see them all together!

Outposts were my first used casino set as well. They are my largest set by far as I have somewhere over 2K of them. I haven't taken a full inventory in a while so I'm not sure of an exact count. As far as values go, I think it depends on the condition that they are in to a certain extent. Here is my best guess:

Quarters - $2.00/chip. Mint SCVs may go for a little more. It looks like you have mostly LCVs but they appear to be in great shape. I have a rack of LCVs with split spots and a lot of spinners which I think would be worth less, maybe $1.50/per.
$1s - .50/chip. Most of the first issue ones are in rough shape.
$2s - $3.00/chip. Maybe worth a little less if they have not been cleaned/sorted. SCVs may command a little more.
$5s - .80 - $2.00/chip. These can have a wide range of value. The used LCVs can be in bad shape with a TON of spinners so buyer beware. Mint SCVs are worth at least $2.00/chip.
$20s - $1.30/chip. I've seen them go for more but there seem to be a lot of them around. They can go for less too. Even the used chips are in good shape.
$100s - $3.00/chip. These might go for a little less now that the new eBay seller unleashed all of her stock. For a while they were scarce and going for a little north of $4/per.

The remaining stock at JWS are way overpriced and I can't see them being sold anytime soon.

Hmmm...all the spinner issues are a bit of a surprise to me. I usually associate spinners with hotstamped chips or after-market labels. Are there mainly spinners due to the wear?

It has been mentioned by many people who bought stock from JWS that the chips were stored in a container/storage locker that was subject to the California heat. There are a lot of guesses that they were warped due to that. Also the LCVs tend to have all of the warping issues for whatever reason. The SCVs are generally the mint or better condition chips. You can tell by the mold but another indicator is the inlay. SCVs will all have lighter brown inlays.

Ive never owned a set of these, but I just love them. I remember seeing a set at one of my first CT games falling in love. I just love the $1s and I ended up basically replicating the $5 in my custom set.

I remember when these came on the market. Nice set, love the 25 dollar chip, yummm

dr...my heart started racing thinking this was an eBay link you provided as i scanned it up and down for 10 minutes before i stopped to read, i went thru a roller coaster of emotions first thinking dam im gonna score this huge set, then oh shit i dont need to add to my Outpost set, then shit maybe i will dump mine if this price is huge.....then back to the start, rinse, lather repeat, rinse, later repeat for about 4 cycles until the caffine from my morning coffee subsided.....sheeez i guess im still in love more than i thought with my small 950 chip set bought from the JWS and a few others.

as far a value in a very general ballpark i think $4k-$6k is actually possible, $2 to $3 range with the paulson spike that has been going on....i think pali is a bit low on the quarters, you dont find many racks of inlay casino quarters in bulk, hot stamps maybe.....the bike tire $1 i would guess may bring a buck each if included as a whole set...maybe bump up the $20...that is one of the best lookin twentys i have ever seen....i think he is spot on for the other denoms. Pacheco may bring a bit more than San Ramon and the scarce demons go without saying how hard those are to find

these will always be a great playable set to use as the worn $1's wont be collectible and the $5 have a great inlay....

those friggin dimes.....i remember talking myself into $400 or $600 a rack is the max i would pay, that urge subsided but it is starting to look reasonable now!!....anyone here want to admit they grabbed them at $700 a rack?.....i think i would pay $400 today, i hope i come to my senses after i stop reading this thread

beautiful set...thanks for the pron (y)

Ah, but are you buying? lol

Great set, Dr. Lovely to see that many great matching chips in one location.

I may be listing all of mine soon. Only about four racks left, I think - $100, $2, 25c pacheco, 25c san ramon, maybe a barrel of $20s. Sold the $25s already, never had any of the others.

please dont toy with my emotions..

hey Dr...doesnt that stack of $5's tilt the shit out of you being about 5 chips shorty...plus your total of 1995 ??? it is a no brainer...im tempted to send you 5 chips so my tilt goes away..

I store the Outposts in two spots. 1,200 chips go in a custom rack by Ozwoodworking, and the remainder in drawers.

full

My current configuration is a bit different from this picture, but the point is I have full racks of chips in the rack that serves my normal games. The 95/100 rack of $5s doesn't get into play - so it doesn't bother me because I don't see it. The $100s and $25s do bother me a little, but not all that much.

I recall the Vineyards and Olivia's well before the Outpost, but I could be wrong. I got 6-7000 Olivia's from Spinnetti's for about $.60/chip, my last ones I sold about 4-5 years ago at $3/chip Problem with the Olivia's was that there was nothing over $25 and that chip and the $.50 were about the same rarity in supply, crap ton of $1s, not so many $2 or $5s either. Most sets I made were 25 $.50 & $25, 200-300 $1 100 $2 150 $5, some I subbed more $5s, but that was the common set. Wish I still had a good set of them, but not sad that I was able to fund all my current sets with the flip (well, partially).

Thanks for the pr0n!

Outposts were in play the first game of March. The last hand of the night was fantastic pitting an ABC TAG vs a skilled semi-loose / semi-aggressive player. TAG raises with jacks, the SL/SA calls with :ah: :9h:. The jack high flop gives the TAG top set and the two hearts gives the other player a worthless overcard and the nut flush draw. The river completes the flush, but pairs the board. Nut flush < top full house. A fitting end.

There were a few sources on eBay because JWS is one of those annoying eBay sellers that won't ship outside of USA. I picked up my quarters from another ebayer many years ago for around $100/rack. I think the estimate on $20s is low. I have been watching for years and it is hard to pick them up for under $2/per.

They weren't clean when we got them. There is a lot of lore about cleaning and rehabilitating vintage casino sets. I remember how foul the water was after cleaning a hundred chips - twenty year old cheeseburger, smoke, hooker juice and grime. Nasty stuff, but they clean up nicely - even the really worn ones.

Best cleaning method here - http://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/ultrasonic-chip-cleaning.1691/

It is roughly $300 to get set up but the results and effort saved are worth the cost if you are doing a lot of chips.

I cleaned a rack of outpost ones using this. Got them nice and clean but it did fade the chip a bit. Nothing some oil didn't fixed though.

I will post up some picture sooner or later ...
