What are peoples thoughts on how to handle sample sets? I've seen some really awesome custom chip sets with like a ton of sample sets out there, and then I've seen really awesome chip sets where there does not seem to be any samples out there. With the latter I'd assume if there were any samples they were privately distributed to a small number of PCFers. With CPC you have to order the chips way ahead of time.. So far I only ordered 10 extra chips of each chip denom. not knowing if any others would be interested in samples. 5 of the sample sets are already spoken for so it would only make 5 others available. Do I just offer these up to people I dealt with before? Or just offer the 5 sets up in some way to the forum where I'll give everyone a fair shot at purchasing the five samples. Do I start an interest thread and collect payment and get a small addition to my order from David at CPC for more additional sample sets? Do people do this? I would have to do this soon. Or is having less sample sets out in the wild better and just keeping it at 10 cool? To the guys who've done their own customs what are your thoughts on this? I'm planning on including with the current sample set the Cash Set Sample, the Tournament Set Sample, and one Bounty Chip. If I ever did any additional samples beyond the 10 it would be without the Bounty. I'm not worried about any of the accessories as I can reorder them from ABC/BRPROPOKER at any time. This is not an interest thread for a sample set, but will start one if warranted.

I ask this because sure I like my own design, but I don't want to be stuck with a bunch of extra sample sets.

Most people -- if offering samples of their custom set at all -- take orders ahead of time, and include the sample quantities along with their initial order to CPC (or whoever).

Sometimes the addition of sample set sales can bump order numbers enough to warrant an additional denomination to be included.

The easiest way is to set up a pre-order thread. For various reasons I don't recommend that method, but those reasons are subjective so do as you will. Rather than discussing what I choose not to do, I'll discuss what I've typically done.

1. Sample sets are work. Collecting money, packaging the product, filling out labels/envelopes, dealing with postage...it's a pain. Determine in advance how much pain you're willing to endure. I'd advocate for not less than ten sample sets (partly selfishly, because I'd like one), but probably not more than 20. Regardless, it's up to you.

2. When I offer sample sets, I typically do so in two groups - one group of folks that are guaranteed a set for whatever reason I deem fit if they'd like one, and a second group that's offered to the public. I typically just put them up in their own thread and say first X responses get it, although I've also done a pre-announcement saying "the thread to solicit sample sets will go up at 12:72 QM", meaning whatever time works for you. That way everyone knows in advance when to be ready and looking for the thread.

3. I'd recommend holding a set or three back in case sets get lost or damaged during shipping. You can always easily give away any unneeded/unpurcahsed extras, but it's a whole lot more expensive and time consuming to order more.

Thanks @Psypher1000 and @BGinGA for your input. I was thinking of ordering 10 more of each denom. and that would be it and so a total of 20 samples would be my limit. I'm not very keen in doing more than that so I wasn't leaning towards an interest thread. I think for the first 10 samples the people whom I've discussed samples with already will get them and the rest of the people below I added to the list I was thinking of offering you a chance at a sample now. For the additional 10 I'll need to contact David and then figure it out who will get them.

For the 10 people now I have the names in mind already and yes @Psypher1000 you are in. @Gear, @Jeff, @BGinGA, @krafticus, @Saoliver, @timinater, @PrOnAddict ,@ChipFinderSK, @MikesDad. If you don't want a sample set which will come in April/May let me know.

Sweet! Thanks. Love Top Gun. Chip are really great. I love the whole concept, but especially the bounty.

Agree with @Psypher1000 whole heartedly!

When I did my custom set I did a thread and made them available to everyone. I ended up with like 25 people wanting them. It was a major pain in the ass packing and shipping them all! When I did add-ons for new denominations I didn’t offer samples. I have given a few away as prizes and for charity but that is it.

If I did it again I would cap it to a small number or not do it at all.

So be very appreciative of the members here that do the shipping for group buys, those people are Heros!

me too, great job with both the cash and tourney sets. As for your question, for my sets I took orders ahead of time, and included it in my totals. It can be a lot of work shipping out a ton of samples, if you want to cap it at certain number that’s entirely up to you. I would imagine these would draw a lot of interest since they’re so nice.

Since sample chip sets are limited (and bc I’m not a sample set collector), you can replace me with someone who can actually appreciate them. Maybe @arch3r or @Chippy McChiperson ?

I am however very interested in a dealer button / bounty chip sample set if they become available!

Yup I would LOVE a sample of these man.

Like some others have said, I just made a sample order thread and collected funds. Then added the necessary numbers to my order and shipped sets out when I received the chips.

I am always very appreciative of the people who offer sample sets ahead of time because they are typically waaaay cheaper to buy ahead of time (at approx. cost) rather than have to buy on the after market.

Hi Everyone.

Ok I emailed David about getting more chips. Asked about 10 of each denom. making 10 more sample sets. I'll just use this thread to see who wants in. @ekricket? @Rhodeman77? @DLManiac? I saw you three guys posted in this thread but didn't say directly that you wanted samples.

@FordPickup92 / @Ben8257 ? I know you guys are collecting samples

@arch3r posted first so you will get ChipfinderSK's spot.

Well take a sample of whatever you're having made, thanks for the tag!

Ps- really love that 5k!

Ok David just invoiced me for the additional chips. He told me no more additions as they start preparing the chips for production a few months in advance. So these are it.

This is a good time to post this thread since I posted mine with samples available with really no clue what to do either.

@Nuhockey I'd trade you my tourney set samples for your cash set samples if you're interested.

Tim I was going to send you a sample since you are my designer, but I can trade you a full sample for your sample. I'd be interested.

Hi everyone Based on the what David invoiced me Sample sets will be $20+$4 for shipping. So $24. The actual chip cost for the sample will be around 19 and then factor in the shipping material and shipping costs. Chips will arrive in April/May. I'll start a collection PM around then.

Feel free to start collecting now, if you want, so you don't have to front the money for us sample collectors.

If you haven't reserved a few spares for yourself to replace a missing chip, you might want to reserve two of the additional sample sets for yourself. It's super annoying to have a rack of 99 chips.

Fortunately, I've never had a chip go missing permanently or become seriously damaged. However, one did spend a few years in hiding.

Nice chips!
