I'm going to host a $500 buy in, 20 player, 15,000 chip starting stack, 30 minute blinds, no rebuy tournament. This is way more than most of my group, me included, normally buy in for. The reason we are buying in for so much is because 1st place will win a seat in The 2019 World Series of Poker Main Event. 2nd place will get a 20% vesting share of the winners profits, if any, and 3rd place will get a 10% vesting share of the winners profits, if any. I'm expecting this tournament to last maybe 8-10ish hours?? but am not as concerned about this one since we will be starting at noon.

Since the buy in is more than we are used to, I am also hosting 3 $100 Satellite Tournaments to get into the above tournament. Each satellite will be ran on separate days but the starting time will be 7pm. I want these tournaments to last maybe 5-6 hours. These will have 12ish-20(max) players each, 20 minute blinds, 7,500 chip starting stacks, and no rebuy. I'm planning on using this blind structure for each.

Is there a way to know about how long the tournaments will last? There will be a few maybe 15 minute breaks in each and a dinner break for the main tournament. Should I be doing the same blind levels for both? I play in house tournaments but don't host them alot, usually just a cash game. Any help or thoughts would be much appreciated.

I like using 4-5% of chips in play. I've found it to be pretty accurate. When the size of the blinds and antes is at 4-5%, that's usually where it will end.

So if you have 12 players, I would estimate your end would come at 600/1200 or 800/1600. About 12-13 levels at 20 min levels, this fits under your time.

20 players would end at roughly 1200/2400 or 1500/3000. 15-16 levels. Still under your 5-6 hour target.

Ok, let me see if I understand this correctly. If I make it 25 minute levels, at 12 players, it would fall between 5-6 hours?

12 players would be 90k in play. 4% of that is 3600, so it looks like 800/1600 would be your finish. 13 levels at 25 min is 5.4 hrs, so that should work.

If strange things happen, like a big stack running over everyone or small stacks surviving longer than they should, it'll run your game slightly longer or shorter. Let me know how it works out.

I have had issues when several tight players make it to the final 3-4 players. This can extend the length of the tournament by a level or 2.

Agreed. If you end up with some players that aren't used to short handed, it can be painful. Just deal slower. They'll get the hint when they only have one hand per blind level. :)
