Add this to your list @Taghkanic (nothing new but it’s in the news)

My guess will be they used the same tourney set for their more expensive main event and the way cheaper side event.

And ppl harvested the chips from the side event and dump them into the main event

Another reason to justify more than one tourney set.... lol. Casino only has themselves to blame, chip sets should be exclusive for various levels of ncv tourney or obviously chaos can ensue. The person harvesting chips must have some insider knowledge however to take the action of harvesting or employing a harvester and then either introducing chips or having a mule also buy in to introduce the chips only to dump their stack to you. All fairly risky endeavors but possible given forward knowledge, some gamblers are magicians and can make chips appear from know where.

Sadly, have seen this happen at bar games where there is litterally no entry fee and the prize is a free dinner coupon. Actually it was the only time I saw this as they used a large commercial set available all over at the time. Happened more than once, nobody cared thou different people seemed to win and the blinds were so fast it was a lottery anyway.

I too would like to know the amount of extra chips. A buyin or 2 of chips would be insignificant at later levels. But if someone added 500k or so, that could impact the outcome.

This is #1 reason I don’t play tournaments at “poker clubs”. No oversight and they wouldn’t be transparent as a casino.

Idk. If you add 20k early, that 20k grows pretty quick…

Players should be policing this stuff. If somebody at my table added a significant amount of chips at any stage in the tournament, I'd most likely notice. Unless they're doing it when they get moved or a table breaks.

Moved/Table breaks/after they win a pot it’s easy to add a T5K or two. I don’t think I would notice tbh…obviously don’t just add a T25k out of nowhere…

Reddit /poker speculates when players chopped other smaller events some of those chips got pocketed. I mean, with an even chop let’s say, who really cares about the exact chip counts. Everyone (including the staff) is probably just happy it’s over. I think this is the most likely cause.

How about at the WSOP in Vegas? They have multiple chip sets, but they don't have as many as they have different buy-in levels. Even if you round a few off, they'd need no less than ten chip sets.

I haven't followed closely, but I'd guess they don't use the same sets in the low stakes tournaments as in the high ones - that's one way of combatting it. They also have a rule that if you take a tournament chip you're banned for life, for whatever that's worth. Also they seem to do a pretty good job of tracking individual stack chip counts in all the higher stake games. But all that said, I'm sure it happens.

They could palm a few chips from their pocket and add them to the pot each time they rake one in.

Unless it was a stage of the tournament where one had cause to be hyper aware of how many chips are on your table and in each pot it could be hard to notice.

Most well-run casino tourneys announce when people are being moved that chips must be placed in a rack, which I guess makes it easier to check for irregularities on camera. But someone has to report it, no one is checking in some back room.

FWIW I always take a pic of my stack as I get up for a break, just in case someone tries to grab any.
