So I am co-hosting a game at a buddies house and he is looking for a much quicker tournament than I hold. He wants it to be no more than 2.5 hours, and would prefer 2 hours. I suggested a double or nothing tournament, but am not sure how to work the blind structure to help along 8 to 9 people being out at the 2 hour (2.5 hour) mark.

20 players
Chip set is 5-25-100-500-1000-5000

What should my starting stacks and blinds be to pull this off?

Thanks!
Craig

The reason it is so short is because he prefers a cash game and didn't want a long tourney.

I'd go with this:

T6000 starting stacks, 15-minute blind levels

lvl sb bb
L1 50 100
L2 75 150
L3 125 250
remove T25 chips
L4 200 400
L5 300 600
L6 500 1000
L7 800 1600
L8 1200 2400
remove T100 chips
L9 2000 4000
L10 3000 6000 ***
L11 5000 10000
L12 7500 15000

Structure is designed to end no later than L10 (2.5 hours) with 20 players and T6000 stacks. You can get it down to just 2 hours (L9) by using T4000 stacks and 13-minute levels.

If the available chip set can handle it, I'd go with 12/12/5/2 stacks, using T1000 chips to color-up the T25/T100 chips. Here is what's needed:

240 x T25
240 x T100
100 x T500
70 x T1000 (includes 30x for color-ups)
-----------
650 chips

If the set doesn't have that many T25/T100 chips, you can use 8/8/4/3 stacks, requiring these:

160 x T25
160 x T100
80 x T500
80 x T1000 (includes 20x for color-ups)
-----------
480 chips

Very nice. This is exactly what I was looking for, smooth transitions with no doubling blinds. Thank you!

@BGinGA Is your timing there to play down to a winner or eliminate half the field? At lvl 10, with half the field left, everyone would have 2 BB left. Doesn't strike me as right.
