I currently have a set of Desert Sands ... http://www.discountcasinogear.com/Desert-Sands-Casino-Poker-Chips-p/23.htm, just as an example page. Have loved the chips, but the denoms I have them in don't match well for cash games, which we seem to be playing more lately than tourney. I don't have exact counts at the moment, I can get them if needed, but I got 50cent, $25, $100, $500, $1000. When using them for tourney, we just use the NUMERICAL value on the chip. But as you can see, these values don't play well for a cash game of $0.25cent/$0.50cent.

So what I would need are 25cent, $1 and some $5 chips. Our typical buyins are for $20 - $25 plus rebuys., typically 5-8 players.

Should I just add-on to this current set, which seem to be almost $1/chip, or start with a new fresh cash set and how should I break it down? Which option would be more economical?

Thanks .....

Since I can't seem to edit my post, I'll add this here. My current breakdown is this:

$0.50 - 91 (missing 4 it seems)
$25 - 196 (missing 4 it seems)
$100 - 152 (missing 3 it seems)
$500 - 75
$1000 - 25

Grand total of 539, so I seem to be missing 11 over the years, otherwise it would be a 550 piece set.

How can I fix this to make it a good cash set?

ETA: It let me edit this post, weird. Anyway, I found these chips here: http://www.americangamingsupply.com/desertsandscasinoceramicpokerchip.aspx for $17/roll with 25 chips in each roll, makes then $0.68/chip.

Damnit! I found another small case with more chips in it of the same set .... updated breakdown of what I have:

$0.50 - 200
$25 - 250
$5 - 50
$100 - 200
$500 - 75
$1000 - 25

Total - 750 pieces. Holy crap! Didn't realize I had that many. Totally forgot about that smaller case with extras in it.

Amazon has three denominations for sale -- 50-chip rolls for either 33c each (25c and 50c chips) or 38c each ($1000 chips) with free shipping:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_n...ker+chips&rh=i:aps,k:desert+sands+poker+chips

Beyond those three denominations, if you plan on expanding your Desert Sands set, I'd talk to Gene @ ABC. He owns both the Nevada Jacks and Desert Sands chip lines, and offers the latter for as little as 50c/chip for 500 chips with free shipping. Let him know what you want, and I'm sure he'll make you a good deal. His standard price for 100 chips is about 69c each, so the more you buy, the better deal you'll get.

However, based on your current breakdown, I'd probably expand your Desert Sands set into a more playable tournament set, and get something else for your cash game needs. The 50c chips are pretty useless, and your other denominations (25/100/500/1000) are much better suited for tournament play, and it won't take very many chips to expand what you have to a really nice and versatile set.

Here are a couple of good breakdowns for each:

tournament:
200 x 25
200 x 100
150 x 500
250 x 1000
--------------
800 chips

cash:
100 x 25c
300 x $1
200 x $5
--------------
600 chips

Thanks for the links. Why is the 50c useless? And what would you suggest for a cash set?

updated breakdown of what I have:
$0.50 - 200
$5 - 50
$25 - 250
$100 - 200
$500 - 75
$1000 - 25

To use your existing chips for maximum value, I'd bump these numbers:

200 x $25
200 x $100
75 x $500
25 x $1000

by 300 more chips (75 x $500, 225 x $1000), to this:

200 x $25
200 x $100
150 x $500
250 x $1000

for a nice versatile 800-chip tournament set. Allows up to two tables of T15K starting stacks (or single table T30K stacks).

For the existing cash chips:

200 x 50c
50 x $5
50 x $25

I'd add the following 500 chips (300 x $1, 200 x $5), to make this:

200 x 50c
300 x $1
250 x $5
50 x $25

to make a solid 800-chip set that can be used for 50c/50c cash games (or just a single 50c BB with no small blind). Add a rack of quarters if you insist on playing 25c/50c stakes.

You arguably could get away with just adding 200 x $1 chips to make this 500-chip set for up to 8 players:

200 x 50c
200 x $1
50 x $5
50 x $25

Or use your existing $100 chips as dollars, no extra chips required.

One other thought we used to do was play $25s as quarters, $100s as $1 and $500s as $5s, basically penny face value. You have a pretty good breakdown already to make that work. Just my $.02
